1 Tim
{4:7} But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself [rather] unto godliness. {4:8} For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

Living godly is not just to profit bodily life and society at large, but is foremost profitable to the soul and resurrection from the dead unto life.

1 Thess
{3:23} And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; {3:24} Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. {3:25} But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

Living holy in all manner of our conversation in Christ Jesus, is rewarded with the eternal inheritance of Jesus Christ.

2 Peter
{2:13} And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, [as] they that count it pleasure to riot in the daytime. Spots [they are] and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;

That also goes for living ungodly. It's not only destructive to bodily life and society, but it also destroys the soul with a just reward of resurrection unto everlasting shame and contempt of God.

The doctrine of God revealed in the Bible is not only that man is made a living soul in the image of God, but also that disobeying God in works is destructive to the soul.

Adam lived by doing good, until he died by doing evil. By doing good, man lives to God. And by doing evil, man dies to God. In the day we eat thereof and sin against God, our soul dies to God.

1 Tim
{6:6} But godliness with contentment is great gain. {6:7} For we brought nothing into [this] world, [and it is] certain we can carry nothing out.

Godly living is great gain in this life and the next. How we live affects our living and our soul, which is all we have coming into and departing the world.

And so, living the pure religion of Jesus Christ by His Spirit and faith, is foremost for our own soul's sake, and the profit to society is the side benefit.

We are justified or condemned by our works, because our works are what God judges our souls by, whether unto life or unto shame.

1 Peter
{1:14} As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: {1:15} But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; {1:16} Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. {1:17} And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning [here] in fear:
