Well, we only have a 2% difference (male to male or female to female) of DNA between Humans and chimpanzees. That is the same amount of difference between male and female humans or male and female chimps.
That means a LOT can happen in that 1.5 or 2%.

Yes. We are very closely related to chimpanzees, and that is demonstrated in our genes. Neanderthals are genetically even closer to us, and the difference is not enough to make them a different species, just a different race or subspecies. The fact that anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals interbred at least occasionally (most humans have some Neanderthal DNA) makes this clear.
