The "Reverend" Phelps and his "church" are no more Christian than the "Reverend" Richard Butler and the "The Church of Jesus Christ Christian/Aryan Nations" was. Idaho did a pretty good job of breaking up the Aryan Nation stronghold up in Hayden Lake with an extremely costly lawsuit which forced the sale of all their property here in Idaho. Hopefully Kansas will have the same luck with Phelps' group.

Christians need to be extremely upfront and vocal that these types of hate-filled, hate driven groups have nothing, not one single thing in common with Christianity. It even hurts my fingers to type out the name of the Aryan "church".

I know that some might have the mistaken thought that if the state can effectively shut down groups like Phelps and the Aryans, then they might become sucessful at shutting down any religious group. However, these groups are NOT religions, they are hate groups masquarading as religion, and most knowledgable prosecutors and judges aren't afraid to call a spade a spade. If one looks into the lawsuits, the suits taken against the groups are not based upon their 'religious' beliefs but rather their hateful actions.

It is important however, for the Church to be on the front lines both in denoucing such hatred, as well as keeping engaged in the political processess working throughout the land. It's both our right and our responsiblity after all. And, if the Church backs out of political processess such as this, then there may come a day where just preaching that 1 Corinthians 6:9 does indeed teach that homosexuality is sinful can be labeled as 'hate' speech.
