Helen Reddy (an Aussie ) sings I don't know how to love him.
From JC Superstar

I know how . . . by doing his will to love till it hurts. This song is Mary Magdalene pining away for Jesus. I have this kind of relationship with Christ. I used to think I could only feel this way because I was a woman, and then I read St. John of the Cross.

Saints like John of the Cross and Therese of Avila were on a different level of spirituality compared to the average person. I have read some of Dark night of the Soul. It's good but hard to empathise with the depth of his faith.
Avila's Interior Castle I found more accessible but then.

Of course this song resonates with all the 60s hippies.

St. Teresa of Avila is my patron saint because she was a writer and had headaches. That's where I got the term Crown of Thorns. That's what she called her headaches. Sometimes I get embarrassed to talk about my passion for Christ and then I read her books and realize I'm not alone.

Jesus told us how we are to Love him. A complicated matter of obedience.
Passion and emotions for Jesus are not wrong, they are just not what Jesus USS to measure our love for him.

I thought God said "If you love me, you will tell me good jokes." He can't stand hearing the same joke twice apparently.

And my new song coming out is called;
"They don't know how to love me".

That hymn used to be my favourite for a long time. It is beautiful.

Perhaps it should be something like "love me with all of your heart just as I love you."
We want to please God by being obedient. We love God, His Wotd and His commandments.

He uses or obedience. He said, if you love me you will keep my commandments.
Yes, specifically, the command to 'love your neighbor as yourself'.
Which, as you are showing, is not necessarily an emotional love but a practical one.
We love by not doing harm to others, and by doing good for them, especially in their need.
When we do that we are loving God:

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’ - Matthew 25:40

Conversely, we are not loving God when we are not loving others:

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’ - Matthew 25:45

To love God is to love others.
To love others is to love God.
That's why those are the two greatest commandments.
