Hi LPTSTR, I f you are a born again believer, you already have the Spirit of Christ. It is that same Spirit that has sovereignty over gifts to each and every believer. There is no such thing as a born again believer that doe not have a gift. We can grieve the Spirit in us (Eph. 4:30) and even quench the Spirit (1 Thes. 5:19), But you can not grieve or quench the Spirit away. It is a permanent possession. In fact it is a guarantee to bring you to the finished and complete new creation, for you are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise! (Eph. 1: 13-14) When God gave you the Holy Spirit, He gave you a new man.... He never changed the old man. So there is a conflict between the two. But we are not under law, but under grace. We do not ask for gifts to do ministry work, but we work out the works that the Lord had ordained in us before creation and the Gifts are received as the Spirit sovereignty wills. These gifts are not something that you are personally good at yourself, but they are what the Spirit gives you as He wills. The gifts will become natural the more we conform to the image of Christ (1 Corinthians chapter 12) (Rom. 8: 26-39)
