SEVERE WEATHER BULLETIN
ISSUED BY THE CANADIAN HURRICANE CENTER
OF ENVIRONMENT CANADA
AT 9:52 PM ADT SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER 2008.

HURRICANE WATCH FOR:
SHELBURNE COUNTY
YARMOUTH COUNTY <- Me :-D
DIGBY COUNTY.

TROPICAL STORM KYLE IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A HURRICANE TONIGHT
AND PASS WEST OF YARMOUTH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT. WIND SPEEDS COULD
REACH 160 KM/H.

A HURRICANE WATCH MEANS THAT A HURRICANE OR AN INCIPIENT
HURRICANE CONDITION POSES A POSSIBLE THREAT TO THE SPECIFIED
AREAS WITHIN 36 HOURS. BY NATURE A HURRICANE ALSO IMPLIES THE
THREAT OF LOCAL FLOODING FROM HEAVY RAINFALL.

AT 9PM ADT THIS EVENING HURRICANE KYLE WAS LOCATED 530
KILOMETRES EAST OF CAPE HATTERAS AND MOVING NORTHWARD 39 KM/H. ON ITS
PATH KYLE IS FORECAST TO PASS JUST TO THE WEST OF YARMOUTH VERY LATE
SUNDAY EVENING OR VERY EARLY MONDAY MORNING JUST BEFORE MAKING
LANDFALL ON THE NEW BRUNSWICK COAST BEFORE DAWN MONDAY.

CURRENT EXPECTATIONS ARE THAT KYLE WILL PUSH TROPICAL STORM FORCE
WINDS OF 120 KM/H WITH GUSTS TO 160 KM/H INTO THE TRI-COUNTY REGION OF
NOVA SCOTIA EARLY SUNDAY EVENING. DEPENDING ON THE EXACT TRACK AND
STRENGTH AND POSITION OF KYLE SUSTAINED HURRICANE FORCE WINDS MAY BE
POSSIBLE NEAR THE COAST JUST AS KYLE PASSES WEST OF YARMOUTH.
A HURRICANE WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED CONCURRENTLY FOR THIS POSSIBILITY.
THE REMAINING COUNTIES ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF NOVA SCOTIA AND IN
SOUTHWESTERN NEW BRUNSWICK CAN EXPECT WINDS NEAR 65 KM/H GUSTING AS
HIGH AS 110 KM/H.

THESE SAME WINDS SPEEDS IN SIMILAR EVENTS IN THE PAST HAVE CAUSED
SIGNIFICANT TREE DAMAGE THAT HAS RESULTED IN DOWNED POWER LINES AND
DAMAGE TO STRUCTURES DUE TO FALLING BRANCHES OR TREES.
ALL PREPARATIONS TO SECURE LOOSE OBJECTS SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY
SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

KYLE IS EXPECTED TO BRING SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL TO MOST OF NEW
BRUNSWICK WHERE RAINFALL WARNINGS HAVE BEEN POSTED. 70 TO 130
MILLIMETRES OF RAIN COULD FALL IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. NEW
BRUNSWICK REMINDS THE PUBLIC THAT RAINFALL IN THESE AMOUNTS IN A
SHORT PERIOD OF TIME CAN RESULT IN RAPID INCREASE IN WATER LEVELS IN
STREAMS AND RIVERS AND LOCALIZED FLASH FLOODING.

ALSO OF CONCERN..KYLE WILL BE ARRIVING AT THE TIME OF HIGH TIDE IN
YARMOUTH
. THE RESULTING STORM SURGE FROM KYLE ON TOP OF THE DANGEROUS
ROUGH SURF MAY LEAD TO SHORELINE EROSION AND DAMAGE TO THE COASTAL
INFRASTRUCTURE MAINLY IN YARMOUTH AND DIGBY COUNTIES.

PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST FORECASTS FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

This should be fun

Notice to the right side in the middle the eye of the storm, its on a straight path for my home. This could be the first hurricane to hit us in many decades. Tomorrow we are going down to the lighthouse to watch the surge, I'll take pictures for you guys.

Man, don't play with this thing.
Get things around your home tied down or stored away out of the weather. Make sure you have water in reserve in case you're without power for a few days. Gear up for lose of power which will most likely be your worst consequence. Dig up a power generator if you can and give some thought to your frozen foods.
It's no fun being without power so stock up on candles, batteries and the like.

O don't worry about me

Everything is Anchored, We have 2 wells, and 2 generators. This should be fun 8-)

Update: He (Kyle) is getting closer and bigger.

I have a 5500 watt Coleman generator. It wasn't enough to pump water out of my well even with everything else turned off.
You may already be aware so just for the heck of it please don't try to wire those two generators in parallel.
I'm praying for you.
Don't take any risks and please don't underestimate the power of these storms.
I just went through the remnants of Ike here in Pennsylvania which left me without power for a week. I was also in Hurricane Hugh North Carolina in '89. That one left my home soaked down to the carpet, ruined all my electronics gear including the TV, (windows were broken out by debris) spoiled all my food, I was stranded in a rural area without power for 10 days and I didn't have a generator. Downed trees blocked our only way out.

Anyway, here's one of my favorite storm tracking links.

http://www.stormpulse.com/

Go full screen and play a little 8-)
Mouseover points on the map etc. to see what it does.

Almost forgot...
GET PLENTY OF GAS FOR THAT GENERATOR!!!
Chances are the gas stations in your area will be without power also.
I used about 5 gallons every day and that was with intermittent use.
If you don't use all the gas you can put it in the car so don't worry about getting too much.
Do you plan to hook the generator to the breaker box? Comes in VERY handy so if you don't have a cable already then get your connector and cable NOW. If the power is out for more than 24 hours the local hardware stores will be sold out.

You are going to lose power. Just before the storm hits run your bathtub full of water to flush the toilet and clean dishes. Do you have at least 10 gallons of bottled water? If not get some. And don't forget you have reserve water in the hot water tank. Just be sure to trip the breaker so the elements don't burn out when the power comes back on.

If your generator pulls water then you'll be fine. If not then you'll be glad you did the above.
And turn off that computer before you lose power... the surges could take out something.

If you have close neighbors then try to get hold of a couple heavy gauge extension cords to help power their refrigerator and a couple lamps. Believe me, helping others is where it's at.

Oh, and while you're at it pick up some charcoal for the grill. 8-)

The cold ocean water in that part of the Atlantic should take much of the bite out of the storm... at least knock the wind down some. Surges are still an issue if you're close to shore. Take whatever precautions necessary.

If you are in a low-lying area like me, get out the rowboat and enjoy yourself. :-D I'm tucked into the Raritan Bay, so we don't get too beat up by storms most of the time.

One thing is for sure; the air will be much cleaner and clearer after it blows by. 8-)

That's why I like being land-locked  . I'll be praying for John!

I appreciate the prayers. Big bad ole hurricane kyle is nothing more then a petty tropical storm...we get those all the time, as Vic said my nice warm *cough* ocean killed the most of it, lol

It is raining pretty heavy though :P

Maybe i was a tad bit arrogant and quick to speak

We had a 2 meter storm surge on a high tide, a few roads have already been washed out and power ha been out for 2 hours and it just came back on, My unit just called and they want me to help block off roads and evac shoreline homes, this should be quite a rough night * dawns uniform* Talk later.

Please be careful John, don't get to adverturess these things are so unpredictable. God bless and you will be in our prayers, and be prepared for the worse, tie everything down, or under the house. Have your water jugs full, candles, charcoal/grill and a generator with plenty of fuel, flashlights/batteries etc. etc. You know the stuff you already know!!!
