I wonder...

Why do some people, in rational conversations/debates about Christianity, usually against atheists, feel that quoting the Bible has any merit?

Let me clarify: I understand that, in personal justifications on moral issues like gay marriage, quoting lines from the Bible is perfectly adequate, because you believe in the Bible.

However, many Christians that I have argued with feel that there is some weight or merit to calling upon passages from the Bible to aid in their debate? Surely, quoting a book that the atheist believes is primarily fiction cannot, from an argumentative standpoint, have any effect.

Do you agree?

Well, I wonder why an athiest would want to spend time on a christian forum? :smt102

Have nothing better to do.. No life maybe.

Surely, quoting a book that the atheist believes is primarily fiction

See I knew atheist believed in something.. They believe not to believe.. Which is still a belief... Personally speaking, I believe it takes more faith not to believe in God then it is to have Faith in God..

Wow.. And not a single Scripture quoted

Just because an atheist joins a Christian forum doesn't mean they don't have lives. It means that they like to debate believers to gain knowledge that they're interested in gaining. At least, that's how I look at it.

In answer to your question--I do believe it is a bit hard to argue using something that your 'opponent' does not consider valid or reliable. If I want to argue why I believe in God to an atheist, I wouldn't use a Holy Book of any kind. I'd tell him/her from my heart why I believe. It' not because a book tells me, but because I feel it and choose to have faith, just like you choose to not.

That's my two cents.

By the by, welcome to the forums!

I understand what you mean, but to gain knowledge all one has to do is seek and they shall find, ask and we will gladly explain it. But to debate in something they do not believe in, or choose not to believe in, it sounds a little obscured to me; just to gain knowledge about Christianty. To come here as an atheist and to debate would seem logical to try and discredit the Bible, Christianty and therefore cause havoc amoung the site.

I see what you mean. However, I feel that debating my religion makes my belief in it stronger, because I am able to put up arguments that stand their ground against those who disagree with my views. I enjoy reading the things the atheists on this site put up, because it's thought-provoking and helps a religious person re-think some things and help him put his religion into, possibly, a deeper persepective. I don't find much havoc in here caused by atheists either.

I praise God that you have patients with them. After dealing with them for years here, I have found that they are only here to cause trouble. I can't remember one turning to God from anything we have tried to tell them.

Thing is, it's hard to get an atheist to turn back to God because, well, from the atheists I know on this site, they've *been* Christians. Then they left it. Some here are well-versed in the Bible as well.

Moreover, I'm sure they respect the people they debate with. I mean, atheists like Quath, for example, I enjoy reading his stuff. He doesn't attack the person behind the post. He likes to deal with facts. He doesn't condemn or make rash judgements of character. I like that. I am religious, but I'm honestly more comfortable with the atheists than I am with some of the Christian forum members. Not all, mind you! A lot of you are quite easy to talk to and very friendly. Some others...well...not so much. I don't like the tone of their posts sometimes, like they and they alone speak the one and only Truth. Or they very easily call you 'child of the devil'...like if you have a different take on something it makes you ignorant or evil.

I repeat, not all the Christians on this site do this. But many prominant ones do...and it's a bit of a turn-off when debating. I don't like being talked down to, and this happens many times. I don't know...maybe this is something only I see.

I agree that quoting the Bible to a non-believer may not do any good, but (here I go quoting a book of "fiction" ), God's word says in Isaiah 55:11, "So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the things where I sent it."

Even if it's not believed it will accomplish what God wants despite what any of us think or believe. I also agree with Judy. Unless you're searching for answers, why would you want to be in a Christian forum? I certainly won't go into a forum where God isn't welcome. I left two different Websites for that reason. I won't go where my God isn't welcome. If I wasn't a Christian I would stay far away from Christian Websites unless I was looking for answers that only God has.

Well for one almost always the atheist doesn't reject 100% of the Bible, they just disbelieve parts of it. If you can adequately back up your claims or make a logical/moral point from a doctrine that appeals to their sense of truth then you can get them to see some truth in what you are quoting.

I don't reject many parts of the bible for its historical accuracy. However, I reject parts that seem hateful or that incite discrimination or beliefs that are hurtful or cruel to others.

I come here to see that not every Christian is part of westboro baptist, and to show that not every atheist is a neanderthol, or a person that absolutely hates christians.

I agree that it is sort of.... not smart to use the bible to try to argue some points.

You can also use the Bible to show how your own views (on abortion, etc) are consistent with your faith.... I've encountered challenges like that before elsewhere.

There is no such thing as a lack of belief.

One believes that there is a God or there is not a God. Each of these is a belief.
