In our house we prefer not to drink alcohol

Okay so we prefer not to drink alcohol. Not necessarily sure it's directly a Christian issue; it may be for some ppl.

We are strongly of the view that it's preferable for us not to, anyway.

It's fine to be abstinant from alcohol and all other drugs; what is wrong is stripping others of their autonomous free will.

I guess there's a whole range of stuff that ppl have different views about.

Yes that is true. It's a blessing multiple views and perceptions can be exhibited and examined objectively.

In some things Scripture is clear; in others, Scripture is either silent, or else can reasonably be interpreted in more than one way.

That's good. So, aside from sharing your preference about alcohol, is there something else you want to say?

I'll try to make up for that.

I agree that the alchohol issue is not black and white. Based on the medical reports I have read, and knowing myself, I think it is medically advisable for me to drink moderately. In short, I believe that, for me at least, the specifically medical benefits to light alchohol consumption outweigh the risks. So I do indeed average about 5 drinks per week (a lot more that I used to).

But, and I want to be clear about this, for other people, the risks of any alchohol consumption outweigh the benefits. For those people, abstaining might be better. There is also the mood-altering issue at play (which is not at play for cigarrettes and cheeseburgers).

I stopped drinking in the 1980s.

So what else did you have in mind?

I thought a respectful discussion would be good.

Maybe we aren't sure what it was you were expecting to discuss. You made a specific statement about your preference, without asking anything in particular to base a discussion on. I think people here have been respectful of your preference and don't see any reason to argue with you!

Were you possibly intending to ask for opinions for or against the prohibition of all alcohol as some Christians hold too? You didn't seem to be saying this.

I:

I guess I was wondering whether any side issues might be brought into the discussion, and about the extent to which the issue is a religious one, or not.

And about any comparisons, etc.

But I guess it's a case of seeing how the discussion goes, too.

I guess that's where I was coming from. A thread was started with nothing more than what appeared to be a personal statement. It would be like me starting a thread with a statement like, "My favorite color is blue. Not sure if that's a Christian issue." I was confused where this thread was intended to go?
