Is atheism the default position? If so, why? If not, why?

I think the 'default' position really depends on how you've been raised, the culture you're in, etc. For example, I was raised in an agnostic/atheistic household that despised Christianity. By the time I was a teenager, I held myself to be a hardcore atheist.

On the other hand, I have many friends who were raised in a Christian household and their 'default' position is belief in God.

This sounds like you are asking for atheism to be an axiomatic presupposition. The natural question is then "is this a defensible presupposition?" How do you know that we can start from an atheistic presupposition as a "default position?"

If there is a default position, it would be agnosticism, not atheism.
