Is Bible study biblical ?

2 Tim 3:15-17
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. KJV

2 Tim 2:15-16
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. KJV

The Bereans searched the Scriptures. Christ also as a young child listened and spoke with the priests at the temple concerning the Scriptures. Paul also was educated by the Rabbi Gamaliel in the law, which is why Paul was a champion of not only grace but also the meaning of the law and its purpose as tutor. "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated under Gamaliel, strictly according to the law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today" (Acts 22:3).

Apollos also was a great aid to the Christians because of his great knowledge of Scripture: "When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ" (Acts 18:27-28).

The thing is that the Scriptures themselves do not give eternal life nor have the power to save, only Christ can do that. You can be a champion of the Scriptures like Paul/Saul was before his conversion and be completely contrary to Christ. Jesus said, "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me" (John 5:39). Eternal life comes not from the Scriptures but from Christ. Nonetheless, we are told to study to show ourselves approved.

And in fact it is the Scriptures that testify of Christ (as Jesus said) and can bring us to him through faith and the working of the Spirit. Jesus put the utmost gravity upon understanding the words of Moses when he said, "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?" (John 5:46-47) and also, "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead'" (Luke 16:31). Jesus also revealed to the disciples the consummation of Scripture in himself: "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself" (Luke 24:27). There lies an acceptable balance though for reading Scripture, which should take you from an erroneous search for attaining self-righteousness and self-salvation by the Scriptures to seeing the entirety of Scripture as testifying of the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation.

Oh yes, it is. Acts 8:27-35 is a paradigm case of somebody studying the Bible and asking for guidance, and getting guidance.

It is obviously difficult for the NT refer back to itself, but I think 2 Peter 3:15-16 is an example.

cybers,

Are self-righteousness and self-salvation opposite/or different qualities, or are they two expressions concerning the same quality/attribute/attitude?

Praise God that the entirety of Scripture is testifying of the Lord Jesus Christ and the eternal purpose of God, the Father, in His Son, Jesus of Nazareth.

Hello Joe,

First of all let me say that I worded that last sentence (the one you quoted) terribly. I have revised it to read: "There lies an acceptable balance though for reading Scripture, which should take you from an erroneous search for attaining self-righteousness and self-salvation by the Scriptures to seeing the entirety of Scripture as testifying of the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation". I see the search for self -salvation and -righteousness as quite erroneous, for boasting has been eliminated by the gospel through faith. "Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith" (Romans 3:27).

I believe that righteousness and salvation for us are two expressions of the same attribute (primarily because neither are of ourselves). Paul said, "I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord... and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith" (Philippians 3:8-9). The righteousness from Christ is the only acceptable righteousness before God, our "righteousness" is not sufficient. Praise Jesus for his justification on our behalf!

Praise God that the entirety of Scripture is testifying of the Lord Jesus Christ and the eternal purpose of God, the Father, in His Son, Jesus of Nazareth.

Amen!

God Bless,
