The Bereans searched the Scriptures. Christ also as a young child listened and spoke with the priests at the temple concerning the Scriptures. Paul also was educated by the Rabbi Gamaliel in the law, which is why Paul was a champion of not only grace but also the meaning of the law and its purpose as tutor. "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated under Gamaliel, strictly according to the law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today" (Acts 22:3).
Apollos also was a great aid to the Christians because of his great knowledge of Scripture: "When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ" (Acts 18:27-28).
The thing is that the Scriptures themselves do not give eternal life nor have the power to save, only Christ can do that. You can be a champion of the Scriptures like Paul/Saul was before his conversion and be completely contrary to Christ. Jesus said, "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me" (John 5:39). Eternal life comes not from the Scriptures but from Christ. Nonetheless, we are told to study to show ourselves approved.
And in fact it is the Scriptures that testify of Christ (as Jesus said) and can bring us to him through faith and the working of the Spirit. Jesus put the utmost gravity upon understanding the words of Moses when he said, "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?" (John 5:46-47) and also, "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead'" (Luke 16:31). Jesus also revealed to the disciples the consummation of Scripture in himself: "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself" (Luke 24:27). There lies an acceptable balance though for reading Scripture, which should take you from an erroneous search for attaining self-righteousness and self-salvation by the Scriptures to seeing the entirety of Scripture as testifying of the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation.
