Is Freemasonry an evil conspiracy?

I was told by my mother that my grandfather had gotten into an industrial accident at work and that he had so badly mangled his hand and leg, that he was never able to return to that job. She said that he was a Mason and that a fellow Jewish Mason came to his financial aid and gave him the means to own/operate a small store(groceries I believe). The Jewish man owned and ice cream factory and that my grandfather, as an act of gratitude, only carried that man's brand of ice cream. Strangely enough, this pattern repeated itself when I too went on disability. A Mason approached me and wanted me to attend the local chapter. I told my mother and that's when she told me the story of my grandfather. I never did take the bait.......after researching them......they're mysterious...........though I was always curious I'm still thankful I declined the "help".
 
All I've heard about them are rumors. Or even rumors of rumors, with no real source to say why they say good things or evil things about the group. Since they hold to secrets that they don't share, it fits that either good or ill could be there. If I met someone who was a Freemason or had dealings with them, then the conspiracies of Freemasons could be given some light.

On that note though, the courisity of knowing a secret, is held back by the command of Jesus to be a light to the world. A lamp that while does not boast, does not hide it's light. To be a follower of Christ I can not be a mason who holds and hides the secrets that are the source of the lore and conspiracies that made it a great storytelling tool.

Are they evil? Personally I don't know enough about them to say they've done any evil. Only that as my current understand stands, I could not be among them. Even if I hear stories of them doing good. Be a light to the world and do not be unequally yoked to an unbeliever.

If I can ask. What did you find about them? And why are you glad you declined the help?
 
I can give you some information if you're genuinely interested. I'm a Mason, but generally don't like to talk about it with non-Masons unless asked, because it so often just ends up with ridiculous accusations about how evil we are.

Matthew 5:15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

Either the secrecy destroys the discipleship or the discipleship destroys the secrecy.

I'd like that. If you'd like I can send you a privite message to continue the conversation, or we can continue it here. If you don't feel comfortable with either, Mike, that's ok. I'm mostly courious about the the orginization and want to set straight some of the more flavorful theories that are assoicated with it. (Both positive and negitive theories, most outlandish with too much imagination).

That said, if your not comfortable that's fine. It's no sweat off my back.

With all do respect, I don't think secrecy in of it self is a bad thing. When it becomes ingrained in an organization that attribute raises a red flag to me. But I've heard that the early church while under persecution had developed a few precautions to keep the church body safe. I also know a rich history in the US that held an underground movement of secrecy to free slaves. Now called the Underground Railroad, it's usually something that is highly prized and well thought of in history classes or historical studies.

That said though, without any other context to the matter, all I've got for the origanization is the red flag of secrets, and the aspect that politics and religion are not discussed. Not enough to call it evil or bad in another way, but still enough for me to not want to join.

But I have known several who were members.
There are several chapters of the group. Each one kinda unique in function. They like being members of a secret club. Some chapters tend to be better than others in performance. All depending upon leadership and the makeup of the group.

That secrecy seems to breed fear and anxiety for those outside the group...but the focus of the group isn't evil or even "self help".

They, like many of the others from their heyday, were about building stronger communities in which they lived.

The Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees, Sunshine, and Lions club, and Elks Lodge all were clubs that were dedicated to fellowship and building a stronger community.
It wasn't about helping yourself and others get rich or controlling the community.

The founders of America were masons . I'm not a fan of Masonry but I have asked a master mason in person.plenty of old structures here have the square and compass on it.

I think I saw a story on The History Channel. It's been a dozen years or so. I can't remember the deciding factor back then but all I know now at this point in my life, is that I don't want to belong to any institution that is not Christ-centered at it heart. Anything else for me at this point is a distraction. I was even invited to join the NAACP recently because of an idea I shared to end racism related violence. But I'm pretty sure they're not Christ centered.....though I know quite a few of the members are indeed Christians.
