My soon to be step daughter is really into anime, she's 12. One of her favorites now is full metal alchemist. I don't know much about anime besides it creeps me out, but do any of you know about this stuff?

I saw some weak cursing in it as well as something about different gods???

What should I do about this, if anything? :shrug

i wouldnt let her watch that. most anime are meant for adults, think of the one called akira(had rape seen and nudity).

When I was around that age I watched all of the FMA series that was out at the time. I also watched the entirety or other anime such as Naruto and One Piece.

These anime did not affect my religious beliefs.

If you want, you could watch the anime with her, and if anything inappropriate appears, you could say that the episode that is on is bad and that she shouldn't watch it. You could also explain that there is only one God (I'm having this issue with my younger brother right now, because they are studying Greek Mythology at school -- he's only 8 and taking the teachings literally) and that the show is fictional, that Magic is against the Bible, etc. If she sees it as just good entertainment, it won't do much harm.

Forcing her to not watch the anime, in the name of Christianity, may be a worse decision. I've noticed that kids with the free will to choose what they want to do remain much more faithful than ones with over-protective parents.

There are some parts in that series, if I recall correctly, that are actually pro-Christian. The main character has a dual with the characters that are themed and named the "Seven Deadly Sins", and wins by calling upon the righteous style of combat.

(I hope that this post is not taken the wrong way. I do not mean to bash JasonCran or any other adult or teen that believes you should not let your soon-to-be step-daughter watch Anime. This knowlege comes from my personal experiance. To paraphrase: I went through a phase of watching anime, It did not change my religious beliefs. It was just good fun and I would make-believe that I was a ninja. Now, all of my friends also went through this phase. These friends are now the ones who most actively research and practice their religion, being what it may, at my school. As opposed to kids who were "sheltered" and are now rebelling agaisnt their parents via sex, drugs, and religion)

That's what I don't want her to do,rebel.

I want to be protective, but not overprotective or opressive.

:shrug :confused

Well, I'd say to watch it with her and explain anything as far as polytheism goes (since that was one of your concerns). And, if anything vulgar shows up in an episode, explain to her that FMA is a show for adults.

Exactly. Anime in America is made to be a lot more "kid friendly". The original versions... Not so much.

one piece, and sailor moon and even mighty morpin power rangers are originally adult toons.
i used to watch anime directly from japan and it wasnt in english, had subtitles.

that was 19 yrs ago.even my favorite robotech has a nude scene in it, that was edited out.

I think a lot of it (and your choice to let her watch it) should be based on where she is in her walk with the Lord. Is she strong in her beliefs of what is right and wrong? Can she tell the difference between right and wrong?

The other thing is that if we put garbage in, we will get garbage out. For example, when my husband was working, he swore, a lot, because that was what his environment. Right now he's out on disability because of a few surgeries he's had, and being at home, he hasn't sworn nearly as much. When we put that into ourselves, that is what we get out.

I have a DVR, so I can record something and watch it later. If you have that, you can record the episodes, watch it ahead of time, and if you think it's something she can handle, knowledge-wise and spiritually, then let her watch it. If you feel it as inappropriate, then don't. Or just check out a few episodes on hulu or youtube and see what you think.
