Now, i listened to part of this record my parents had found, and it seemed at first to be sorta pro relgious, but then it seemed sarcastic.. It kept making references to "im a jew, hes a jew jew jew jew" (not those exact words but every other line had somethign to that effect)

I am sorta confused cuz it seems to portray a partly negative view on christianity

I've always heard that it was really a mockery of Jesus and Christianity. However I've never looked into it.

ya. wasnt sure, i really dontlike the and/group/person, so i could never listen to it for long...

I've seen the play, it is almost as bad as Godspell. I Just don't like how Broadway distorts Christ's message.

Check out the "Broadway" venue where it first appeared ;)

It seems to have come around about the time that the Jesus movement was popular.

It might have possibly been an attempt by mainstream to relate with what was popular with the youth.

Wow, this thread takes me back. I was fifteen when the movie came out. I couldn't understand why the Youth Pastor was so against it.

This was during the height of the Charismatic Movement. Everyone was gettin' saved. Christianity was big business, and true to their nature, the entertainment business was right there to cash in.

I never got the impression that Superstar was anything more that a non-believer's view of the gospels. Not satire, or meant to discredit. Just a very marketable translation of Jesus' ministry.

As much as I like the music, I have to agree with the Youth Pastor. It's not very edifying.

i agree. and also, a very humanistic view of the gospels at that, which ironically shows that they never even read them properly (if at all) to begin with. sigh!
