Jesus said....
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Iniquity = Anomia (Greek)
Anomia = negation of the Law
James the brother of Jesus and Leader of the Nazarenes said:
Act 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
In 1 Corinthians, we have Paul "negating (making unimportant)" God's Law and Jesus' pronouncement becomes true. Paul here teaches against James comandment above. NOTICE: Paul doesn't come right out and say against it...but it is very clearly inferred that the Law is negated:
1Cr 8:4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that [there is] none other God but one.
Paul doesn't condemn it....he is saying it doesn't matter, Idols are nothing....that is contrary to whay God says.
1Cr 8:5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
Here Paul is admitting there are gods....
1Cr 8:6 But to us [there is but] one God, the Father, of whom [are] all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom [are] all things, and we by him.
This is true....
1Cr 8:7 Howbeit [there is] not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat [it] as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
Paul is saying that it's only a matter of mind involved here....Paul seems to be saying that eating meat sacrificed to an idol is wrong...if you recognize it as meat sacrificed to the idol. He should be condemning it outright.
1Cr 8:8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
Paul is softening the argument up to make it more paletteable.
1Cr 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
Who is Paul suggesting is weak? I believe it is the Jewish/Gentile Christian who is abiding by James order....Paul suggests that meat offered to idols is nothing more than "meat". He suggests that there are some who eat the meat offered to idol's knowingly and that is bad. He suggest that those who eat meat sacrificed to idols without worshiping the idols are liberated from James Law, therefore negating the Torah. The weak according to Paul are those who are offended by eating meat sacrifice to the idol.
1Cr 8:10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
What is this verse suggesting? that the man who has knowledge (Jewish law) is weak because being offended (because he knows it's a sacrifice), but by seeing Paul's "free from the Torah" man eating, eats?
1Cr 8:11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
1Cr 8:12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
Paul is covering his bases...the weak "torah minded" brother has been influenced by Paul's "free man".
1Cr 8:13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
And Finally Jesus chastising the Pauline Chruches of Revelation:
Rev 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
Did Paul really say it was ok to eat meat sacrificed to Idols? Isn't that Anomia? Isn't that a false prophet like Balaam? Is it Paul whom Jesus is referring to in Mat 7:22-23?
didn't finish...be back later...
