In my post, I was referring to the latter. In reference to the first description you've provided, I would say, 'sank like lead'.Depending on context, dropped like a sack of potatoes to me either means to disassociate as quickly as possible or cold cock someone.
For example, if I were to explain how one of my early girlfriends broke up with me I could use the phrase, "She dropped me like a sack of potatoes." Or, if I were to explain how a boxer might have finished a fight I might say, "He dropped him like a sack of potatoes."

How many times do we use the phrase, "It's just common sense!"
There's a saying that one of my high school teachers used quite often. "Common sense is not so common." Common sense is not something we are born with. It is a learned thing. The phrase "common sense" just means that it is common knowledge within a group because a lot of people have been exposed to it and understand it. It has nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with exposure.
