Is The Adult Age Eighteen or Twenty-One?

US products compete on a world market. Its in Americans' best interest to have worker bees who can produce better products than the competition. Engineers and scientists who can design better factories and products. Doctors who can invent new meds to keep people healthy.
 
I just found out last night that apparently even though you sometimes still have to go to school at eighteen, apparently some schools have early releases on Wednesdays which I guess the reason I never had them is because I always got out at two.
 
It is crazy, isn't it? 18 to vote, move out on own (unless emancipated or run away), get married (in most states), be able to sign most documents for yourself, do taxes, apply for your own government/state benefits, etc. then 21 for drinking and other things.

Although this is the legality of it, it feels 25 is more accurate because the brain still develops a lot between 18 and 25. Anyone under 20 should still be considered a teenager, really.
 
What a lot of young people are wanting as they approach and enter adulthood is gravitas.
They wish to be treated as if they are more responsible and respectable...given authority and position.
And they may have qualifications that make them qualified to do stuff but its handed off to others.

The best advice I can give is that they need to find other things to do in the community besides video games or spending time in music/dance clubs.
There are organizations like Lions, Kiwanas, Sunshine, Elks, Junior Chamber of commerce, and etc that will help a young person become a member of the community....as well as friendships that can and will promote career choices.

My wife currently has a nice great position that came about because of a small prayer group she had founded had a member that asked for a resume who turned it into her big big boss. As a result my wife works almost directly under board of directors in the largest employer in middle TN. Her abilities and accomplishments are perceived on a similar level as their own.
And that's how it happens and is done...when she speaks today everyone listens. When she first came here 8 years ago she was upset that she couldn't get anywhere or recognition for her abilities...her honesty was not appreciated by her superiors either.

The lady who asked for the resume? She is but one of the lowest level administrative assistants possible and working somewhat beyond her capabilities. But is seen as honest even if she isn't capable.

And this is why i say, community involvement is crucial for all young people.

at 45, I will say while I don't have the same struggles as I did at your age but to say that I have got life figured out? no, life wont allow anyone to have it figured out. God wants us to seek him, struggle seems to force us to look to him

a verse that says that,"cursed is the ground for your sakes" it means you will struggle to grow things and ponder about a deliverance from the sin you have commited.

I hear you! I remember when I turned 18. It felt like I was on top of the world with tons of power at my fingertips. Looking back on it, I was so childish! Responsibility didn't have a correct meaning. I could be responsible with some things, but not with everything. I did a lot of growing up between 18 and 25. When I had my first child, I felt like that truly put my mind in gear. Although, because of my stubbornness before then, I feel like I missed on a lot of good opportunities. I can't go back and change it, either.
 
There is nothing magic about getting older.

People tend to judge you for your actions and accomplishments...and many for the manner with which you speak. Assistance for the leader of a charitable event is worth tons more than any "artsy" tattoo gotten for gravitas.
(Not saying tattoo is bad...but the reason for a lot of young people is gravitas)

No, but there's something extremely magical about deciding to stay young at heart. :) That's why I decided that when I got old enough, I decided to start growing younger and I would just like to see somebody TRY and stop me. :biggrin



 
It's all relative. But the funny part of it is that most would say they thought they were adult at the time, only to discover years down the track that they weren't. It is always the older wiser ones that say that the adult age group ought to be much older than it is.

The highest rates of suicide and death by accidents (or ignorance) is by those between 19-25.
 
Becoming an adult (outside the context of a legal question), never happens to be attained on one particular day. People grow into adulthood and each person's progress is on their own timetable.
And no one becomes capable of making adult decisions across the spectrum of choices at one momentous time.
So the laws regarding legal adult status evolved and are always evolving to reasonably give the acknowledgement when it's generally been attained by a critical mass of people.
The laws also are considered as to how the consequences may effect society as a whole.
Frankly I think people under 21 often make poor choices regarding education and its value. The more that walk away from an education the more people that tend to be less productive members of society. Doesn't mean all of them will be but the purpose of having age limits on dropping out is not just about offering a right at a specific age but protecting against too many people dropping out. More people come to regret not continuing education than regret getting too much.
