What is “acceptable sin†and can a born again Christian have“acceptable†sin in their life? First it should be pointed out that the term“sin†is known sin, meaning we know God’s will and righteousness and decide to go against that known will of God. We also need to ask ourselves, is any known sin acceptable or allowed in our lives if we are going to call ourselves “Christiansâ€.
Many have come to the conclusion that a person cannot live in this life without sinning against God, because of our circumstances of being physically born with the sinful nature and also the pressures of the world that constantly bombard us with overwhelming temptations. These are very true conditions and pressures that affect everyone in this world – But Christ has come to give us the power to overcome the world and the power to overcome our own sinful nature.
1 John 3:8 - For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. NKJV
Christ has come to free us from the bondage of sin so that we can truly be free of sin and worship and obey God through the WAY of Christ.
John 8:34-35 - Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is aslave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. NKJV
Anyone that is in the WAY of Christ has been given the power to not sin any longer, and instead has the power of God’s grace to rid themselves of all sin.
Eph 4:31-32 - Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. NIV
<st1:pCol</st1 3:7-10 - You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. NIV
We should understand that we have the power through Christ to rid ourselves of all sinful thinking and actions. So any known sin that we still have is then sin that we must be allowing or accepting to be in our life.
How does Christ overcome this world and all its temptations to do evil - By God instilling into us His Love in the proportion to our faith.
1 John 5:3-5 - This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. NIV
If we have partial faith in Christ, then we will be partially filled with His power of His love and can only overcome the lighter strongholds of our sinful nature and the lighter temptations of this world, but if we come to a full faith in Christ, then we will be fully filled with the full power of His love and overcome all un-righteousness in our lives. Afull faith brings the full power of God’s Love to overcome and destroy all the powers of darkness in us. It is this full Love for God working in us that will destroy the sinful nature, our sinful nature is “the works of the devil†in us, and when this sinful nature has been destroyed in us, we will no longer be overcome by any temptation the devil throws at us. For anyone born of God has and is living by this power of God’s full Love. This full Love of God is what keeps the sinful nature that was once alive in us dead and gone.
What will keep a person from having this full faith and receiving this full Love of God? It is sin that we “accept†and allow to keep in our lives.
I tell you the truth, no one that accepts or allows any un-repented known sin in their life will come to be entirely sanctified. No one that still has known sin in their life can experience being born again into God’s nature. No one that allows or accepts any known sin in their lives can be filled with the Holy Spirit (baptized with the Holy Spirit) and made one with Christ.
Acts 5:32 - We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him. NIV
The only ones that are given the Holy Spirit are the ones that come to a point of fully obeying Christ. This full obedience can only be done by the power of Loving God (goodness) fully. When we come to the point of Loving goodness only and hating all evil, this is when we are ready to receive the fullness of God in the form of the Holy Spirit.
John 14:15-17 - If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. NIV
To come to salvation, where we are given the power of not having to sin anymore and being able to worship God, this is a free gift of God, but to live in Christ and have Christ live in us – obedience is required.
Heb 5:8-9 - Although he was a son (Christ), he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him NIV
1 John 3:24 - Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. NIV
If anyone desires to be filled fully with the Holy Spirit and finish their sanctification process and be born of God, then they will have to stop letting and/or accepting any known sin in their lives.
Rom 12:21 - Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. NIV
Overcoming all evil and known sin in a person’s life is very possible. It is all possible by the power of faith in God’s Truth – “The Truth of God†being “Christ Himself†and all what He represents. This full faith will bring the full Love of God, which is the goodness of God, to overcome all evil.
A Christian cannot “accept†any known sin in their life, otherwise they won’t and can’t be born of God - until any and all accepted sin is repented of and they become fully obedient out of faith and Love for God. This Love of God is actually the Love of all GOoDness, which then also hates all evil (sin).
1 John 3:7-8 - Dearchildren, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. NIV
