Trust UK media to leave it till 2 Nov to tell us, but even folk with full-time jobs are able to do the 50,000-words (175 pages) by midnight on 30 Nov, at @ 1600+ words a day, they say

I just have time to say that, before I'd read the article - on p3 of Metro - I'd been praying that God will raise up more Christian writers, having watched/listened to Pilgrim's Progress on http://www.ucb.TV - 8.30/10.00am

Even as digital techno was launched, media said it would lead to more & more TV & radio stations

& a need for more good creative writers

Many folk devote 2.5/3 hours a day to things they are interested enough in

"The harvest is white, but the labourers are few: ask the Lord of the Harvest to send out workers into His harvest fields"

You may be encouraged to know that I'd been praying since yesterday for appropriate inspiration for other writers today, as I have to go soon & may not be back online till Thursday

I just know that God has people out there with stories that need telling: inc parables that may have been burning in your heart for years, yes?

Note that it's a fiction competition, so you'll have to 'change the names to protect the innocent' as they say :wink:

Anyone wondering if there's an acid test to show who's likely to be a good writer? :o

Nearly all good writers are avid readers :wink:

Writers' & Artists' Yearbook - in all reference libraries - analyses the requirements & the style of every magazine published, that is open to freelance writers :P

Every writers' course advises reading several issues of any magazine you want to be published in before submiting work to them

& advise you to try writing short stories, articles, poems, etc for publication before sending larger works to editors, so that your name will be known (& you can send those editors such samples of your work that can be read quickly to assess your ability & appeal)

Those who have not been keen readers may want to test their skills by asking the makers of your favourite TV series, etc, if they'd like to read sample episodes written by you

It's like the ending of today's Metro feature: it gave a sample of a past entry's opening & asked, "Can YOU do better?"

My gut instinct is, if there's any natural writers reading this, you'll already have thought that about films & TV shows you've seen, yes?

In fact, if you have the degree of imagination it takes to 'make it', you will have had recurring dreams of exactly how you'd do it better

What's the secret of success?

In almost all fields of human activity, it's not so much proven ability as sheer energy, enthusiasm & determination

In any field, you can see folk at genius level - but if they are too lazy to put in the hard work needed to excel, they will under-achieve

Equally, you can see folk of way less than average ability - but if they are motivated, enthused & determined enough, the sky's the limit

Lord, raise up the right folk to make real impact in published & broadcast media

One last thought: some who saw that sarcastic Metro feature may have been put off by its title; "Are you ready to write a load of rubbish?"

Or by its snide, "more than 75,000 kamikaze writers from around the globe are expected to take part in this year's event...Make no mistake: you'll be writing a lot of rubbish & that's a good thing"

It's a competitive field, with deadlines to meet & hard-nosed, Simon-Cowell-style editors to get past

But if you've been thinking, for ages, that someone has to do something about TV/the media, why not either give it a go or ask your friend-most-likely-to?

It'd take 2000 words a day for 25 days, if any reader feels led to share this with friends on Sunday at church

I feel strongly in my spirit that Sunday is the last service at home for maybe several folk who plan to spend the winter in warmer climes, & that God may be calling some to write a full length - (100,000/150,000+-words) novel over the next 3/4 months

I'll just yahoo writers talk - but I'm sure from interviews that many a writer 'of a certain age' finds it most fruitful to get away in winter & set aside 2/4 hours a day, aiming to write 1000-1500 words a day for 3/4 months -(allowing for re-reading & re-writes to get max quality)
