Hello brilliant buddies in Christ~

Let's look into one of the names of our LORD~ a name that I have not heard before tonite ... in a home Bible study. A name like these;

*God is Holy,
*God is Love,
*God is Light,
*God is Life...

I may not have a complete list here. :oops:

From Exodus 34:13+14 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me; For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

This is the only place in the Bible that it states this Name of God. So my question is ... What does this mean?

*God is Jealous? :crazyeyes:

I could only find ten verses in the Bible that state His jealousy: for Zion Zech 8:2, for Jerusalem Zech 1:14, His jealousy brings His holy vengence Nah 1:2, for His land Joel 2:18, for His holy name Eze 39:25, His jealousy is holy~so that He cannot forgive unrepentant sins Joshua 24:19, Yet in Duet 6:15 His jealousy for His people stops Him from acting on His anger, His jealousy causes His people to fear bowing down to idols Duet 4:24 + Exod. 20:25............................................................

I have long known that one of God's attributes was jealousy, after all in several places He claims His ownership and Lordship over His people, His creation, His word, His name etcetera; even saying ... You are Mine. ;-)

Can you find this refered to in the NT? Knowing that the Lord loves as intensely His chosen people Israel; as those of us so blessed to be grafted-into the Vine, and also chosen out of the world. I supply this scripture, where He states His ownership literally.

Isaiah 43:1 But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called [you] by your name; You [are] Mine.

Can you ellucidate these scriptures, or others you find to help me understand what God is saying about Himself~ and about His relationship with us?

And thanks ... Giving all my Praise to the LORD for your assistance. :infinity: bonnie

2Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Err, those are not names. They are attributes of God, but not names.

Oh! thanks CC, you are so right. :oops: I have corrected this below after doing a more through search, and included a more complete list, thou it probably still lacks. :smt102

The names of God:

El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty)
El Elyon (The Most High God)
Adonai (Lord, Master)
Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah)
Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner)
Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd)
Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals)
Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There)
Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness)
Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You)
El Olam (The Everlasting God)
Elohim (God)
Qanna (Jealous)
Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide)
Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace)
Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts)

WOW!!! Recently, at VBS we freshly learned that God knows each of us by our name, shouldn't we know Him by His?

The meanings behind God's names reveal the central personality and nature of the One who bears them. Throughout Scripture God reveals Himself to us through His names. I believe that by studying these names that He reveals to us in the Bible, we will better understand who God really is. Do you think you may supply further assistance? :smt115

As Nehemiah 9:5 exhorted~ we ought also to; " Stand up [and] bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise."

Hey Potluck~

Thanks! So we gentiles, grafted into the true Vine, are as much a part of the LORD's jealous love as the are believing Israel. Interesting...

What fascinates me here is how this jealousy seems to resemble the jealousy of a human husband for his own wife's chastity, or for the chaste virginity of his daughter.

I have always thought of human jealousy as a vice. The jealousy of person is selfish and self-centered. It usurps the rights of others, it is blind to their happiness, and it involves their ruin by leading to tyranny, and it cares nothing for anybody else as long as it has its own way.

So can we say that God is possessive? Certainly He owns us~ we are bought by the most precious blood of Christ. Yet Paul here speaks of godly jealousy, a kind of a safe guarding of the virginal love of Christ's bride for Him alone.

What do you think? :Fade-color bonnie

This has nothing to do with the subject at hand, but I'd like to mention in passing that Elohim is plural. ;-)

That's so okay Vic, it works into the discussion too ... Elohim refers to more than two, am I correct? Then... is only God the Father~ Jealous? Or is there anything that witnesses to the Spirit or to Christ either being jealous~ or having a name that is jealous?

I wonder........................................ :infinity:

I know, lets ask Newton! He's got some interesting beliefs about the Godhead. ;-)

:lol:

I'd reserve the attrbute of jealousy for the Father. I'd explain, but time is limied right now. 8-)

Ephesians 1:11-14 (KJV)11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

The Holy Spirit is the seal...the promise left to us as earnest of our inheritance until the entire church is redeemed..."redemption ofthe purchased possession". We have been set apart as His possession, and we know that God is longsuffering for the sake of the Church...He is patient for her. He is also jealous for her, and that is why He reminds us to avoid fornication with the world...worldly lusts. Fornication was a deal breaker for a marriage, because a virgin was promised and required...unless mercy was shown. God is jealous for our hearts, and our faithfulness.

Titus 2:12-14 (KJV)12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

This verse shows that we are His, purified unto Himself, as a peculiar people..NAS says, "God's own possession", we have been set apart for Him. Again, there is a call to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, because we are His alone.

1 Peter 2:9 (KJV) But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

Again, we are a peculiar people...the NAS says. "But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION," We are bethrothed to God, and to fornicate with the world is to not be presented a virgin.

Ephesians 5:22-33 (KJV)22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

This passage reveals the church, and came to mind when you spoke about husbands...if we are His, bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh, then we are ONE with Him, and we are His flesh! HE does not hate His own flesh. Eve was taken from Adam as a picture of this in man, and marriage is the continuance of that picture...all pointing to the church's relationship to Christ. We are His. This marriage also makes us children of the Father.

I hope these help, they do not speak of jealousy, but show that we are His and why He would be jealous for His position in our lives. The Lord bless you.

Hi, lovely... that is lovely!

Hi Lovely~

You have put your hand upon some wonderfully inspiring and enlightening passages, what a blessing to my question!

Summing up your points (I hope)

WE are God's
* purchased possession
* peculiar people
* chosen race ( one made up of all races?)
* royal priesthood
* holy nation
* body (called out ones?)

He owns us, because He fully paid for us, we are no longer our own. Our peculiarity especially is seen in our purity--- or virginity. Kept pure (and keeping ourselves pure) from idolitry and fornication with the world. Yes? His jealous love participates in this purifying work. We are also uniquely and specifically picked to be His. :oops: Our Father is Spirit, He has priests as His children~ that they may minister by for thru and to Him. :crazyeyes: Having been given gifts work offerings blessings everlasting things the world can never partake of lest it become His called out bride.

May I ask does the consumation of the groom and bride still wait to take place in heaven, upon the wedding day of Christ Jesus? Our marriage day is to come, yes? :fadein:

Yet we are the children of God because we have become His sons ... by faith in Jesus our Captain. Our Father's jealousy is protective, that of a Daddy for His little boy-- He desires His son's best, He seeks to bring His son into His glory-- to make His Awesome beauty spotlight and perfect His child, as He did in the sufferings of His Son Jesus Christ.

Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. :o
Hebrews 2:10 For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

So God is possessive in a truly holy manner, for He possesses ONLY what He completely owns, in both a legal manner, and by a bethrothal resulting one day in a union chosen by those He possesses. Thou He rightfully owns all mankind, all creation is His~ He will not possess the old creation which will melt with a fervent heat, nor the wicked whose end is weeping . . . :cry:

Thank you Lovely~ so much. I think its so cool that this study comes along side the other one we are doing so nicely, isn't God marvelous? :infinity: bonnie
