Because He had two parents.
Nope. Both are for Joseph. In a literal sense, neither could be geneologies of Jesus, since God was His actual father, and Mary his mother.

It's an important clue that one is of the line of David, establishing kingly power and one of the line of Levi, establishing a priestly power.
 
One was Joseph's line and the other was Mary's. Printed and published to show the Jews he was of the line of David. Normally it was only the female genealogy, as the true Father may not be absolutely certain.

One was the Jewish line that is from the mother. You are only a Jew if your mother is a Jew.
And the other would be patriarchal authority structure. Kingship through male line.

Both versions purport to be for Joseph's line. So that story won't work.
