Jesus and the Pharisees

Jesus and the Pharisees both taught the Mosiac law. You would think that because they had this in common that they would be friends, instead they were bitter enemies. Why was this true? Jesus not only taught the Mosiac law, he elevated it and spiritualized it so that we will sin, not by what we do, but also by what we think, Matthew 5:28.

God never intended for his people to live by laws, rules or commandments. The law was given as a temporary measurement until Jesus arrived and then they were to live by faith and the Holy Spirit. The law does not make one righteous, if anything the law promotes sin, Romans 7:8. Under the New Covenant righteousness is by faith, Romans 4:3-5.

The reason that Jesus was angry with the Pharisees was because "They say, and do not" Mathew 23:3. Which made them hypocrites. The Pharisees were not qualified to be teachers of the law, simply because they were sinners born after Adam, Romans 5:12. Jesus was and is the only one qualified to teach the law because he was without sin. All others are hypocrites.

Every Christian needs to read the 23rd chapter of Matthew. It is the most sever rebuke of the Pharisees ever recorded, He called them, hypocrites, snakes, sons of hell, fools, blind guides, whited sepulchers that are full of dead men's bones, vipers, murders. I am afraid that Jesus would be banned from this Forum for name calling.

I would say that before one becomes a teacher of the law and the commandments as a means of becoming righteous, they should consider the consequences of doing that. The preaching of the law has its place, but it is not for making anyone righteous. The law convicts us of sin and brings us to Christ, so that we can be justified by faith, Galatians 3:24. The law also reveals the righteousness of God.
