Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." Matt 26: 39
Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." Matt 26: 38
Are Jesus and the Father one in the sense they share thoughts, ideas, experiences? It appears the answer is no.
They are separate in a real sense, in which as independent beings with their own choices and expression they share with each other, having the same heart and nature, while also being separate.
Jesus in this context is literally sharing with the Father how he feels, not as a superficial display of this is how I should feel, I know I am going to be resurrected and overcome death and am the eternal Son of God, but as a man, limited, scared, worried, tired, weak and in this place crying out in pain but out of choice submitting to the agreed action and destiny testified in history and shared along Jesus's whole ministry, though this does not lessen the trouble and pain involved. It is said rightly to be courageous is not to have no fear, worry or stress about a situation, but while in this state to still choose to follow through.
And Jesus needed to bare His soul to the Father, in love and appreciation of Him, and the Father needed to hear the suffering of Jesus and how difficult this is, or as Jesus would say impossible.
Jesus openly had this conversation before Peter so that Peter would know the nature of the Father and Son relationship, which Peter is now sharing in. Jesus is so open, so real, so humble and meek and so grounded. We find it hard to conceive in our status driven approach and desire to prove things through our position in comparison to others, yet the son and Father value each other through the love they show,
God bless
