John Coltrane is almost universally regarded as one of America's greatest saxophonists, next to Charlie Parker. Whenever I listen to Blue Train or A Love Supreme, a chill creeps into my spine. I'm by no means a jazz nerd, but I can't describe how much I enjoy his music. In it is a uniquely American sense of freedom that transcends the jazz genre, making his music popular amongst fans of all music, even to rock-listeners like myself. Coltrane's aforementioned masterpiece, A Love Supreme, was written after he became a born again Christian and is probably one of the few Christian albums I not only can tolerate, but truly love. My questions are two-- first, are there any other Coltrane fans on this board? And next, why is it Christians perfer more formulaic music to art like Coltrane's? I've seriously never met a Christian that dug his work.
