Sword of the Spirit
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God. (NIV) Ephesians 6:17
...continued from yesterday
On earth, there are 2 kingdoms in conflict: God's
Kingdom and the spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians
6:10-12). Paul tells us that we must be prepared and
be protected. We are to put on the armor of God:
the belt of truth, the breastplate of
righteousness, "feet fitted with readiness that comes
from the gospel of peace," the shield of faith, the
helmet of salvation, and lastly, the sword of the
Spirit.
The sword was both a defensive and an offensive
weapon for the soldier. It was used to protect and to
fight. Paul tells us that the sword in our spiritual
battle, is the Word of God. The Word of God ("rhema"
in the Greek) is the Bible. Our goal is to take
Scripture passages and apply them to the specific
situations in our lives. But, you must know the Word
to be able to apply it to your life.
How can you keep your way pure? By living according
to the Word (Psalm 119:9).
Want to be
blameless? Walk according to the law of the LORD
(Psalm 119:1).
Need counseling? Try God's
(statutes) Word (Psalm 119:24).
Are you
weary? Draw on God's strength according to His
Word (Psalm 119:28).
Need hope? Remember
God's Word (Psalm 119:49).
Need comfort?
Remember God's ancient laws (Psalm 119:52).
Need knowledge and good judgment? Believe in
His commands (Psalm 119:66).
Need direction?
Have God direct your footsteps according to His
Word (Psalm 119:133).
With the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, you
have all you'll ever need to live a godly life - you
have Jesus Christ and His written Word to guide you
through life, to protect you from the enemy's attacks
and to allow you to stand firm for Christ. The more
exposure you have to Scripture, the more the Spirit
can use it to change your life. Any Christian who is
not spending daily time in the Bible is not only being
directly disobedient to God, but is also robbing
himself or herself of coming to full maturity in their
faith.
Where's your weak point?
What Bible passages do you know to combat the attacks from the enemy?
Do you know enough Scripture to take the offense?
The Sword is effective when used at the moment of
danger, during any temptation.
The sign of a strong Christian soldier is his use of God's Word - not only
knowing it, but applying it to his life.
So when do you make time to expose yourself to God's powerful
weapon? Take your stand in the spiritual battle by spending time in God's Word!
