John the Baptist - #1 Enemy of the Temple!
People often believe that John the Baptist was a docile man performing a harmless ceremony of baptism. But in reality he was the number one #1 enemy of the temple priests and religious leaders.
Consider that John the Baptist was clothed in a garment of camel hair and ate locust and wild honey. Here you have a person, John the Baptist, wearing a garment of camel's hair, which is a forbidden animal, eating locusts which is a forbidden food, and also eating honey which is a food that exemplifies God’s favor and blessing. (Locusts and wild honey are symbolic of our own knowledge of good and evil that we all have because of the sin in the Garden of Eden! Honey - Good ; Locusts - Evil)
While all the temple priests were practicing the sacrifice of a lamb for the forgiveness of sins they were also showing everyone how sinless they were in their devotion to Mosaic law and the subsequent ritualistic practices.
Then the heretic John the Baptist came along doing the exact opposite in the wilderness!
The temple priests must have been incensed that John the Baptist was baptizing people as an act of purification, and as an admission of one’s sin, while clothed with a forbidden animal, eating a forbidden insect, and also eating a food of holiness.
Imagine the anger of the temple priests who thought John the Baptist’s “antics” in the wilderness were making a mockery of the temple priest’s sacrificial ceremonies all the while watching throngs of people lining up in the desert to be baptized by John!
There was zero chance that anyone connected with the Temple would have been seen being baptized by John the Baptist. But then Jesus Christ showed up and wanted to be baptized by John the Baptist! The religious leaders knew right then and there that Jesus Christ was also their #1 enemy of the Temple for approving of John the Baptist’s ceremony that seemingly made a mockery of the Temple priest’s own self-righteousness.
Final result - the priests of the temple wanted John the Baptist and Jesus Christ - ‘removed’!
Baptism is a sign of our admission of our sin and the need of a redeemer to bring us back into a Holy relationship with God. That redeemer is God’s son Jesus Christ who died on the cross for all of man’s sin. To ensure your redemption from all sin then just believe in Jesus Christ - God become man!
That’s it! .... (then get baptized to seal the deal!)
God Bless
