In the Book of Jonah he was asked to preach against the city of Nineveh.Apparently Nineveh was a very wicked place. They would skin people alive and rip out tongues.
What are your thoughts on the Book of Jonah?Do you think there are any instances that we can relate to what is going on today?
I have seen that archaelogists have found some remains in their digging of Nineveh right outside of Mosul. That is one of the places that is having a huge amount of problems right now.

Did you see those pictures in the news about all of those hundreds of people they were lining up and shooting?Looked like the holocaust.Unfortunately the news wanted to show the horrible details.

Maybe had the news wanted to and had the ability to show the horrible details of Hitler's holocaust to the world, others would have stopped him a lot sooner and saved so many thousands of lives and so much misery.

Yes,I just finished a book about that. The whole horrible facts were ignored while millions parished.

Nineveh was wicked, but what place wasn't back then? The fact is that because of Jonah's preaching Nineveh repented and deferred God's judgment against her for a generation until the prophecy of Nahum was fulfilled. I don't believe the inhabitants of that general physical area today are connected to the historic biblical Nineveh.

10 And the Lord said, “You did nothing for that plant. You did not make it grow. It grew up in the night, and the next day it died. And now you are sad about it. 11 If you can get upset over a plant, surely I can feel sorry for a big city like Nineveh. There are many people and animals in that city. There are more than 120,000 people there who did not know they were doing wrong.”[a] Jonah 4:10-11 ERV

9 Then God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry because the plant died?”
“Yes,” Jonah retorted, “even angry enough to die!”
10 Then the Lord said, “You feel sorry about the plant, though you did nothing to put it there. It came quickly and died quickly. 11 But Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness,[a] not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?” Jonah 4:9-11 NLT - God ends with a question?

Matthew 24:14
New Living Translation (NLT)
14 And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations[a] will hear it; and then the end will come.

The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 2 Peter 3:9 NLT

I have had Jonah on the brain for a day or so.
The book of Jonah (IMHO) is possibly the best example of Grace under the Law.
Grace under the works of the Law was temporal and depended on man. There is no eternal life associated with Nineveh hearing of their sin, and their repentance. There was a blessing that lasted for years.

The interesting thing is the reluctance of the prophet to offer Grace (or your favorite mercy word). How many of us Christians today are slow to offer the great commission to those we are a little ticked at.

Introduction / repentance toward the Father is still a lot like Jonah's message (sin still has to be identified and a warning given ). Introduction / belief in Jesus gives eternal life (not just a short blessing). Introduction / infilling with Holy Spirit gives power to witness to those we do not want to. Church discipline helps keep the NT grace active. The Holy Spirit striving against the flesh is available.

Jesus stands at the door of the human tabernacle, and knocks. Those who open the door now are eternally changed (IMHO especially in the believing mind). The flesh still is present, but even that is changed at the last trump.

We see the OT grace in Jonah. Do we offer all NT grace things today ?
