I thought this was an excellent movie. I recommend it - especially those who like Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) movies. Some great lines, excellent battle scenes, etc. So far its the only movie that Orlando Bloom does a decent job acting in.

I did have a few problems with it, though. It really tried hard to make the Muslims look a lot better than the Christians. And a few other things that I won't say because I don't want to spoil it for those of you who have not yet seen it.

My friend described it as a greeting card to Christians w/a middle finger hidden inside.

I thought it was alright. Not as good a movie as Ridley's other recent shows.

IMO, the Christians were aptly portrayed. There was corruption, politics, false theology and superstition running rampant during those times. The 900-1400s were probably the darkest times in the church.

The Crusades were not as glorious as the church makes it out to be. Look at the 4th crusade when the Christians sacked and slaughtered fellow Christians in Constantinople!

I wouldn't say that the Muslims were necessarily portrayed as 'better' but haven't they always been shown as terrorist savages? Perhaps it is a bit more refreshing to show it the opposite sometimes. I doubt in reality each side was better or worse than the other.

Saladin was a great military leader, however, and the movie does show it. Islam didn't spread as wide and fast as it did for nothing, you know.

I left this movie feeling very sad, the message was loud and clear. Knowing biblically where everything is headed for Israel, I can see how the movie industry is playing a part in shaping that mentality.
I should have expected as much.

I saw the message of the movie as "forget theology... follow your heart." Also, "a soldier is responible for his own conduct. A ruler has no power over that."

I liked the movie. It seemed to show hope that we could all get along, but show that hatred and interpreting God's will a thousand different ways will hurt us.

i've been excited about seeing this movie on account of the all-star cast and i also just have a thing for long movies with gory battle scenes. it's entertaining!

does anyone know, how accurate is the movie in referencing religion? is there a good deal of artistic license or do they stay very close to recorded histories?

i really liked this movie. there's a lot of good i could say about it, but i don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

the only thing i didn't like about it was that this movie had the studio-exec's-axed-40-minutes feeling to it. they've done it to ridley scott before with blade runner and the rerelease with his more desturbing ending wowed sci-fans many many years later. i am VERY excited about the directors extended edition. this is a movie i might very well buy on dvd. i have a small dvd collection and like keeping it that way. this movie was GOOD!!! :-D

The one drawback to the movie is they had to have a villian and a hero. I would have liked it better if the people were more shades of grey. For example, the main guy is a knight from birth who moved to Jerusalem with him. He never cheated on her. When he was coming back to the city, he was let in by Saladian on an oath that he would get his family and leave and not take up arms against him. However, once in the city, a priest absolved him of his oath.

So I think Ridely Scott's main message is that there is hope for Christians and Muslims to get along.

you didn't think that orlando blooms first action in the film showed his characters shade of grey? i thought there was a bunch of grey, with all of the main characters, and i just don't want to discuss it yet because i'd be giving stuff away.

an added bonus for this movie, other than it being entertaining, is that it's long. you'll feel like you get your monies worth.

Orlando Bloom's character was suppose to be the ultimate in what a knight should be. However, the real knight was born a noble and stayed a noble and was willing to throw away an oath if needed. So I think this character was made more "good" and probably Guy was made more "evil."
