Lamentations is a lament from the prophet Jeremiah in Acrostic form during the destruction and invasion of Jerusalem which lead to Israels exile from the land. This was keeping in step with the covenant at Mt. Sinai that the Israelites agreed to. If you read Deut 28 - 30 there are blessings and curses attached to the keeping of the covenant. Israel failed to keep the covenant and was doing things worse than Sodom and Gomorrah as echoed in Jer 50, and echo'd in his contemporaries Ezekiel (chapter 16) and Isaiah (chapter 1 - 3)
