I'm trying to fact check a pastor about some things he said about being a Rabbi. It was highly interesting, but it didn't come from scripture. I've no reason to doubt the man, just doing my diligence. I know some here know jewishness (is that even a word, lol) better than I...

True or false?
A rabbit's apprentice will be taught a trade.
A Rabbi's apprentice is literally yoked to the Rabbi, and must follow behind the Rabbi, learning to walk exactly as He does...so much so, that by the time the yoke is removed, others can tell who's rabbi is the students by the way he walks?

A Rabbi kicks up a little dust as they walk. The student (following in his footsteps) would get this dust on the bottom of their robes, but won't wash the robe because where the Rabbi has walked is considered holy ground?
If the student goes to visit someone, and can not be received for some reason (they're not home)...then the student is to, shake the dust off their feet to leave as a blessing to the home as a gratuity of sorts?

a Rabbi doesn't take on many apprentices, thus is a coveted position. People seeking to become a student used to loiter around (like guys loiter around the spot labor office), hoping the Rabbi would come out and say follow me...

So supposedly, since Jesus was a Rabbi, when He was out walking, gathering disciples...follow Me...they knew exactly what was happening. To become an apprentice to a Rabbi!!

I always wondered about that, why guys would get up and follow a stranger. One left his dad on the fishing boat, bye dad..., another left his position at work collecting taxes to follow...how could that be? Divine inspiration? Not at all, they could tell Jesus was a Rabbi.

Does this hold water?

Why not find a rabbi and ask one?

Aww come on Jason, you gotta know something about Rabbi's....have you ever heard any of this?
I'm not knowledgeable in that aspect on Judaism. Yeshiva is where you can start

No. Not accurate.

Students must first excel at bethgashepher...the Torah is memorized alphabet history grammar mathematics etc is learned. Only the best and richest students graduate.

Bethmidrash us next and the rest of the Tenakh is memorized. Also debates on the meaning of the Torah.
IF you do well here you can become a grammiton. The best of the best with the best reputation may one day ask a rabbi if you can follow him. IF the rabbi says "yes" then the phrase "when a telmadeem you follow so close behind your rabbi that the dust from his sandals covers you" is your job.
IOW you do everything your rabbi does from the blessing (before OR after a meal) and precisely that blessing to his theologies to coughing to snoring...whether you do or not. So much of your life is wrapped up in becoming the rabbi you follow. So this way long after your rabbi dies he will live on in you.

One day if and when your rabbi decides you have learned enough he will turn around to you and say, " go make disciples ". That means you are now a rabbi yourself. (The lowest order...schmeekah being highest and can interpret the Law..." As one having authority " is used to refer to a schmeekah rabbi.

What you said pretty much supports what I was hearing. Thanks Brother...

All jews learn torah.they recite that at bar or bat mitzvahs.

The word means teacher.Jesus was called a rabbi. I'm going to look into the context.
And what did Jesus say about calling others "Rabbi"? That was the point. Jesus is obviously more than Rabbi, and He says "Call no man Rabbi" because He is the ultimate Rabbi, and the ultimate Prophet.

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. (Deut 18:18,29).

Israel did not hearken unto Christ, and thus God brought judgement upon Judaea, Jerusalem, and the Temple, and scattered the Jews far and wide. There were to be no more rabbis.

So that means no more temples either.I didn't know that there the Hebrews weren't Hebrews any more the rabbis go way back.they taught after the diaspora. Hebrews In the milleniium will have temples or churches?if churches then how are they hebrews?

So the Hebrew early church used what word fir teacher in the mentioning offices?

But be not ye called Rabbi - As our Lord probably spoke in Hebrew, the latter word rabbi, in this verse, must have been in the plural; but as the contracted form of the plural sounds almost exactly like the singular, the Greek writer would naturally express them both in the same letters.

None of the prophets had ever received this title, nor any of the Jewish doctors before the time of Hillel and Shammai, which was about the time of our Lord; and, as disputes on several subjects had run high between these two schools, the people were of course divided; some acknowledging Hillel as rabbi, - infallible teacher, and others giving this title to Shammai. The Pharisees, who always sought the honor that comes from men, assumed the title, and got their followers to address them by it. See on Matthew 19:3; (note).

One is your Master - Instead of καθηγητης, guide or leader, (the common reading here, and which occurs in Matthew 23:10;), the famous Vatican MS., upwards of fifty others, and most of the ancient versions, read διδασκαλος, master. The most eminent critics approve of this reading and, independently of the very respectable authority by which it is supported, it is evident that this reading is more consistent with the context than the other, - Be not ye called Masters, for one is your Master.

Even Christ - Griesbach has left this out of the text, because it is wanting in many of the most excellent MSS., versions, and fathers. Mill and Bengel approve of the omission. It might have been brought into this verse from Matthew 23:10. Our Lord probably alludes to Isaiah 54:13, All thy children shall be taught of the Lord.

Ye are brethren - No one among you is higher than another, or can possibly have from me any jurisdiction over the rest. Ye are, in this respect, perfectly equal.

its they way they have that office, not. this is akin to the use of oaths. an oath is what trump will swear, a sin, an all military takes. if you take it that way without the context its a sin.

The "call no other rabbi" is that they were to call no one else their father.

Rabbi means father/teacher.

The link from a messianic temple says the connotation of rabbi in Matthew 23 as does adam clarke who was is knowledgable in Hebrew it's master.

Which is different than lord .
It meant they weren't to follow any other person as a disciple.

The Hebrew for lord is adonai, elohim, not rabbi.
The way they called themselves rabbi and the usurping of an authority of an infallible one at that is the problem

The spanish word, which came from Latin, teacher is maestro, which means teacher.we get the word master.I take martial arts,my shihan is a master In his arts but will not say I know it all and I'm the best.there's always room to improve.Jesus is perfection there's no room for him to be better for He is perfection.see my case.in Hebrew one word cab mean more then just one thing.ie shalom, peace, peace as you do torah, simply hello.the connotation gives it to you.we must consider the first audience whenever we read the bible.
