Liberty in Christ

T

the Evangelist

Guest
This may be a very easy question to answer. I know the right answer based on the Word of God (the KJV). I'm asking this question to see the response and to find out what type of people are on this site.

Here goes. The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:1 " to standfast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free....." my question is this; Are we free from sin or are we free to sin?

the Evangelist :D

Verse 13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

We are freed from sin but we are also free to sin if we don’t want to yield ourselves to the Spirit and follow what Jesus taught. Every person makes the choice of whether to follow sin and die or repent and follow righteousness and live eternally.

Romans 6:16 Know you not, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are to whom you obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17But God be thanked, that you were the servants of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18Being then made free from sin, you became the servants of righteousness.
19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as you have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20For when you were the servants of sin, you were free from righteousness.
21What fruit had you then in those things whereof you are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are going to Sin every day of your life, no matter how much you do not want too
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are freed from sin but we are also free to sin......
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are free of our Sins in the midst of them.
19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh.

Example, Mother Teresa and Adolf Hitler where both slaves to Sin... Hitler sinned will fully he loved it he was a slave to it.
Mother Teresa was constantly focused on trying to purge herself from Sin, she was also a slave to Sin.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The repentance that God is requiring is not repentance of Sin, you will Sin everyday of your life, and become constantly focused on trying to purge yourself of Sin you will also become enslaved to Sin.

Repent of your own actions and deeds to attain right standing with God, and put your trust in the actions and deeds of Jesus Christ on your behalf.

This is the Repentance God is calling all peoples too.

Peace

Paul said if I sin when I do not want to, it is not I that sin but sin that dwells in me. If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us, just as we forgive those that sin against us. You sound more like you want to be delivered from having to obey Christ, not sin.

First, you are judging them, when you don’t know their hearts. Second, we are told to constantly resist sins and wash them away in the blood. When we sin, we have to confess it and forsake it. If we walk in the light of God‘s mercy and love, the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin. We only become slaves to sin when we yield to it’s temptation. When we resist it, and forsake it, even the devil flees from us. When we resist sin, we are strengthened by God’s power. When we give in, the world, the flesh and/or the devil takes control. You are slaves to whom you obey. Who’s your Daddy?

That’s just wrong. You don’t become enslaved to sin by resisting it. You become stronger in the Lord every time you exercise your God given right not to commit sin. This is the ‘word of righteousness’ in Hebrews 5:13 -14:
For every one that uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
But strong meat belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Just like you don’t become enslaved to tobacco, alcohol, drugs or cheesecake by resisting them. You become enslaved by not resisting them.

I don’t trust in my deeds and actions to attain a right standing with God, the blood of Christ does that. All my works could not take away even my smallest sin. Sometimes, I don’t even realize that I have committed a sin. I must rely on the faithfulness of the Holy Spirit to show me how I have offended God so that I can repent and know his forgiveness. Knowing that I can trust in his blood to take away my sin when I confess it, gives me power to forgive others as I have been forgiven and to share the love of God shown to me by loving others by his example. If you gut the gospel of these deeds, you are left with a form of godliness that denies the power thereof.

I find many places where God demands and warns us to repent of sin. I don’t find anywhere that he says we need to repent of doing good. Do you have some references for that?

Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

I am free from sin. I am free to obey Christ. I am free to come to God with my sin, and be set free FROM it. Jesus Christ did not die on the cross to give me the ability to sin.

Welcome to the board, the Evangelist. You said your motive was to see what kind of people where here. I promise, our true colors do not take long to show through. I suggest going through some of the posts in the recent past.

GabbylittleAngel quoted:Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Thanks, Gabby. I meant to put that one down and forgot it. Of course I was going to go on and on about how we die to self and put the old nature to death by living in obedience to Christ though.

Hmmm..... you failed to understand completly.

Alright I try to explain a different way......

Jesus died Once for all..... he does not keep getting back up on the Cross every time you stuff up in life...... and you are going to stuff up again in life I can assure you of that.

Are you always focused on weather you are doing things according to Gods Will, are you always examining what you do so as that you might not sin, are you always asking for forgivness instead of giving thanks for it....Or are you free of your sins in the midst of them...... and as a result find that while you are still sinning ...... you are sinning less.

Crikey look at me becoming focused on sin trying to explain to you.

Whose actions and deeds are you putting your trust in for right standing before God, your own... or Jesus Christs ?

Repent of your own actions and deeds to attain right standing with God.

Your Sin debt is already stamped... PAID IN FULL......the question is do you really believe it.....yet.

Peace

I understand what you’re saying. I just don’t agree that’s what the Bible teaches.

He doesn’t have to. He only had to die once for all sins of all people. His sacrifice was perfect and complete and the debt was paid. He rose from the dead, proving it was accepted and complete. Now we must die to sin and self and live in him, walking in the way he taught. Our life is in Christ. He that has the Son, has life. He who doesn’t have the Son, does not have life. If you live in love, humility and forgiveness for others, you will be living ‘in Christ’ and he will be in you.

Nope. Focus on love one another and pleasing God and stop looking for your own needs and pleasures. The basic J-O-Y principle. Jesus first, others next, yourself last. Listen for the reminders from your support group, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who will continually ask, “Is that love one another?†and when you are tempted to sin, look for the way out. God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able to endure and will make a way of escape.

You have to try to avoid sin. Even when you watch out for it, you might run into some. It’s like running in the dog-walk area. You can accidentally or carelessly step in dog do-do, but that doesn’t mean you have to roll in it.

You become perfect before God by confessing and forsaking your sin. This is made possible by the blood of Christ. Only the blood makes this happen. Period. When we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Believe that.

As for prepaid sin, my sin debt hasn’t even been totally racked up yet. Until I commit a sin, it doesn’t even exist. Until I commit it, and repent of it, I can’t confess it. I’m not really sorry that I’m going to punch you in the snout if I still fully intend to do it, am I?

You are still striving and working and doing....... you are enslaved by Sin.

Spirit Driven wrote: You are still striving and working and doing....... you are enslaved by Sin.

Yup, striving, working, doing…and don’t forget running, resisting, fighting the good fight… a struggle every day. Running with patience the race before us… with Jesus as our example and inspiration for our faith as we strive against sin. You have a strange perception of how to be an overcomer. You become enslaved by what controls you, not by what you resist.

Have you read any of these? I could find dozens more:

Hebrews 12
1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

Titus 1:16
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

2 Timothy 2:21 -22
21If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
22Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

James 1:21 -24
21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
17And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

2 Peter 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
11For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

1 John 2:4 He that says, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abideth for ever.

Do you have any verses that say I would become a slave of sin by resisting it? I would be interested in seeing such an oxymoron in context.
