linux wallpaper

When I change wallpaper on my computer ( Linux ) it changes ok but if I decide I want the old one back it is no longer listed in wallpapers. It has happened twice the old wallpaper disappears I can not find them. Is this some sort I one time use files loaded on my computer.

When I read this I was under the impression we could search for wallpaper, do a right click on it and copy an URL link to the individual selection we wanted, and then recall it in the future if needed. That didn't work, and clicking on it changed my wallpaper to something I sure didn't want. Not wanting to go through it again, I decided to go to Restore Your Computer to an Earlier Time. My old screen was back, but none of the Favorite Shortcut Icons to internet connects now worked.

I got my Computer man on the phone that gets me out of truble at $1 per minute using a Team Viewer program, and he quickly found that my Explorer on Windows was missing, and that the problem was due to some virus that has got into the wallpaper portion of my computer options. He flew through numerous programs to my amazement selecting this & that and got me back on line in about five minutes. You mentioned that a certain wallpaper you once had was no longer available, and I suppose that probably to demand. On your program, do you have option of selecting a Restore Your Computer to an earlier, which I believe would also restore you old walpaper; it did for me.

Sounds like you are using Windows. I use Linux; it came with several ( about 12 ) wallpapers on my computer. Naturally I thought if I changed one and wanted to go back it would still be on my computer, its not. Also I just got back in my house about 15 days ago; had a kitchen fire been in hotel 5 months. One of the things I did not get back was my external hard drive where I store my backups so I can not restore because at this time I have knw back up; restore does work I used it befor after auto update that I did not like and restored back before the update
I have used alot of windos versions but for last two years I been using Linux. Thanks for the reply and all the trouble I put you through trying to help me. mGby

Not sure how much help I can be, but what version of Linux are you using? I'm an Ubuntu fan myself.

I started out with 14.4. I guess 14.4 had ran it course and I took the offer to upgrade to 16.4 LTS.
So I do not know if the wallpaper was left over from 14.4 or if it was put on during the 16.4 upgrade.
I changed my wall paper and tried to go back to the first one and it was not available I found several
but not the one I had. so I changed it to a different one then decided to go back to the second one and it also was not longer available. I am thinking it may have been some sort of one time use wall paper.

Okay so Ubuntu,

I found this. It's a good idea for the future, but I don't know about recovering your lost wallpaper yet.

Copy all your wallpapers to the Pictures subfolder of your home folder. Right-click on the desktop and click Change Desktop Background. Select picutre instead of wallpaper. All your wallpapers (in the Pictures folder) will appear. Select one as your background.

Im not to concerned about the two I lost. I did not know I could save as picture. I guess that means I can use any picture as wall paper. Thanks for the help. Sorry I forgot to say Ubuntu. I had read the Ubuntu post
that you linked; I did not think it was right for my problem cause i was not dealing with the log on/ didappeaing part of it. Thanks very much. may I ask a different question about usb drives.

I didn't do on the link but everything CHH told you is correct. And since you apparently don't know the name or the actual pixel size of the lost Bg I can't help their either but hang in there with Ubuntu, it's the fastest growing OS in the world and is costing MS a fortune.

It is the system for both Nerd and the User only. If you want to work in the Terminal, search the web for Linux Cheat Sheets. I picked up a huge book with every Command and every switch for seven dollars at the local used book store.

Roro1972 have you tried the "get more backgrounds online" function to find your lost wallpaper? I don't know if this will work for you, but it might be worth a try.

I second with th1b.taylor. That's what I have been doing, i.e. saving the wallpaper I like in a folder. I don't think this is an issue at all. I think MS just does not delete any picture you set as a background so that you can choose it again. Linux (at least my machines) tend to overwrite the background picture to the new one you selected. It defaults to a different directory and I see the background picture there,and when another picture is chosen, that new picture is there in its place (probably deleting the old one). So unless you save pictures in your own picture folder, it probably gets overwritten.

This is not necessarily bad. Just different. I rather Linux not try to emulate MS and do stuff like MS does. But in a lot of functions they do. And the more they try to imitate, the more I noticed it acts quirky like an MS machine-- just not as bad. lol

Thanks for the replies, sorry I been in the hospital this past week so Im slow to answer just got out last light before dark. As I said Im not concerned in locating the one that was deleted I was more interested in how to keep it from happening and now with your help I can keep and change background pics when I feel like it. I really appreciate the help from everyone.
