Bible Study looking for a place to start

i used to be on fire for God and felt His presence within me, that was over 20 years ago and i have just recently re-dedicated myself back into His service, after being backslid for many years.
i have been having problems feeling God's love, although i do feel Him when i sing, but i want to feel Him all the time like i used to.
Does anyone know of a good place to start in reading His word that can help me and guide me.

I would start in John's gospel. It is different than the other 3 and gives more insights on many things. write down your questions if you have any. After your done come back and ask your questions that you have written down. From there I would go to matthew mark and luke. Then on to acts. get your questions answered before going on thou. When you understand john's gospel the others can give more detail in other areas. Often if you have questions you end up confused if you go on. Also get a good Commentary bible that has the footnotes down below. I also like the NASB version because it's very easy to understand yet doesn't change orginal meaning.

First let me say, welcome back brother....

I agree with what Rinid said, especially the writing down questions.
But I would take a little different approach at where to start. Nothing wrong with starting at the Gospels (main 4 ) but you said you had been an "on fire" Christian at one time, and now since you are back you want to feel that heat again!!!

I get you, I was there, when I got saved I was so on fire myself and sometimes that high mountain experience comes and goes, but when I walked away from God for 3 years, coming back has not been so easy. I mean it was not the same fire I had for so many years before.
I think you should start your reading and study Romans..... The book of Romans is one of my favorites, not only that it is all about WHO YOU ARE in Christ and What it means to be Who You Are.... The first 4 gospels are important (the whole Bible is) especially for a new believer to understand Who Jesus is and His ministry and all, but I think you may already know that, you need a refresher course on Who You Are in Him..

Just my two cents :2cents

God bless you on your journey.

The idea is to start back in the begining and make sure the foundation is strong to move forward on. As Who Jesus is is important. If we start on a mixed foundation can you go forward with a sound understanding? How fast you get through that has to do with how strong your understanding is already, but making sure the foundation is strong is always a good starting point... If you were there with someone and know the foundation your working with then you can move from there. I've found alot of confusion can be avoided by a good foundation. Restarting a fire can be harder than building one burning.. meaning one that comes back your never sure why they left. The important thing is building of faith and that starts with a good foundation, then moving on to who we are in God, then forward to who God calls us to be, then on to what service does he call us to. Be careful skipping pieces unless you know where the person is from past experence with them.

Still good to see your post danny. Love the spirit here.

kragan sorry didn't mean to get the topic off helping you, just wanted to suggest good helping points to danny.

Your absolutely rite, a firm foundation is a must and I was not trying to get him to skip one section to move on without that firm foundation. I guess I am going on my own faith walk, being in ministry for so many years I just guess I knew my foundation was strong, I needed to get back to who I was in Christ, I already had a good idea of who He was. But your rite we do not know where he is coming from and at what level of faith he is. So starting at the first 4 gospels would be a better place to go. :yes

All replies are excellent in advice. I too am stirred and grateful for your return. Two decades is a long time to journey in the wilderness. This coming from a man who has set up camp there himself. Not a ‘dry spell’ but a wilderness.

To reignite the fire that once blazed. I hear you. Where to start? That’s the question. Why not begin where you veered off and took the detour?

Along with all that was advised, I would also open the bible to the places where I once spent time with Him. Places I was familiar with. It could be in the Book of Psalms, it could be just one verse in the New Testament. Watering holes if you will. Places in Scripture where, at one time or another, God spoke to me personally. Places where He refreshed me.

And as I open to those places (or any other), I would ask the Lord (and still do) to share something about Himself with me. I was eager to hear; even if it pertained to where I needed to conform into His image. And as I consciously entered into intimate fellowship with Him (naked), nothing else at the moment mattered. I was communicating with my God and He was speaking to me through His Word (once again). It’s always a good place to start.

Did I understand what He was saying all the time? Did what I read make sense and could it be applied to what was happening around me? Not always. But regardless. I was personally fellowshipping with my Savior; and He with me (once again). We opened the bible together and we communed.

So whether it’s here or there in His Word (and all are good), A good place to start is by, yes being aware of His presence, but also letting Him know you look forward to His counsel in the time you spend together.

From one who’s been there, “Welcome to the A.W.E. (after-wilderness-experience) of God!â€

Be blessed, Stay blessed!

Great advice, I love A.W.E. may I use that? :)

I to took a 3 year trip in the wilderness I sure was glad to get home alive, and I did what you said here, I open the Bible to where I felt most at home and where God had spoke to me the loudest at times in my walk with him prior to the wilderness. This is why I said Romans in my first post, it is a special book me and God had a lot of discussion there, mostly Him to me.

I just got done reading "The Land Between" by a local pastor and author here in my area, what a great book, spoke a lot about where I was and where I am heading once again.

But all the advice here has been good and the main thing a brother returned home Praise God!!!!!
