Loving Yourself

Loving yourself is something I have struggled with, But when I read Matthew 22 I felt some conviction on this. If I were to love others with the same measure I like me particularly if I sin I would not like people much at all. It seems to be a commandment

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’<sup class="footnote" value="[<a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-23910c&quot; title=&quot;See footnote c&quot;>c</a>]">[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’<sup class="footnote" value="[<a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-23912d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;>d</a>]">[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

How do you love yourself? How do I do it.. humbly. Any idea?

1st.
Pray for it. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with love for yourself so that you may better love others.

Do not be overly reflective on your life. In addition, practice being prospective instead of being introspective and retrospective. Furthermore, fill your mind only with excellence.

Philippians 4:8

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Matthew 6:33

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

I totally thought this was on another topic when I read the title and the first couple of sentences. :toofunny

Anyway, the best strategy I suggest for you to use is struggling to realise that we are essential the same as everyone else. Let's take forgiveness, for example. Make an effort to forgive yourself the same way you forgive others. Do not be extra hard on yourself. Easier said than done, however. I have been struggle with treating myself well for six-years now.

I agree on everything you posted. This is something I've dealt with myself. Self Forgiveness is a key element in loving ourselves.

That's a great question and it is central to God's message to his people and is manifest through God loving us so much, that he gave his son for us.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any commandments that command us to love ourselves because we already love ourselves, and I think this is exactly where your question comes from.

And I think the answer is to be found directly in the command to love your neighbor as yourself. You see, to love your neighbor as yourself may just require you to treat your neighbor better than you might treat yourself and by doing so, you may just begin to see things in yourself that were hidden, just waiting to bloom. Think about it, how can you forgive yourself if you can't forgive others?... There are many other examples along this line too. How are we to pray unselfishly for ourselves, if we can't pray for others? You get the idea.

Scriptures state that God is Love, and he showed his great love for us by giving of himself through Jesus. If we want to experience a deeper love for ourselves, then perhaps it starts with experiencing what it is to love others, even those who we think are un-lovable.
