Bible Study Luke 1:26-29

Luke 1:26-29
King James Version (KJV)
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

Luke 1:26-29
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Jesus’ Birth Foretold
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.

26 Gabriel was also sent to Mary. Nazareth was where she was from even though her ancestor was from Jerusalem, this being David. This shows that people may have not lived in the areas they were promised or entitled to by the scriptures; they were under Roman rule which may be the reason why.
27 Mary was engaged to Joseph and it is very important that she was a virgin because if she had just been a young girl who had gotten pregnant it would not have been a miracle because this happens all the time. It is also important that she was a virgin because it made her a pure vessel for Jesus to born from. It is also important that they were descendents of David because Jesus would need to be to be Christ, the coming King.
28 Mary was the one God chose to carry the Lord and His one Son, the One that would save the world.
29 Women were not often viewed as important to God’s plan. They were often just viewed as companies to their husband in the best cases. God uses women for His purpose just as He does with men, now He may not ask them to do the same things but both are to serve the Lord and ways He leads them to.

You are so right Clark. The women in the O.T. and in the N.T. were not considered very important other than man's sexual enjoyment and having sons born to them. My goodness, God must have been saddened over the treatment of His beautiful HELPER for Adam and all men born to him. I find, that in a marriage between a man and a woman there is a great dynamic going on there. Without going into a lot of psychology, What the man lacks in his role as a husband & father, the woman excels in. And what the woman lacks, the man excels in. They are a TEAM. As long as the two realize this, life is good.

The land transfers when a woman marries; so that when tribes intermarry, the husband's children would inherit the land belonging to the mother and their tribe. In the case of Mary and Joseph, they were apparently without land -- and therefore I think that renting/leasing anyplace was common. Notice, though, that Mary's cousins -- Elizabeth and Zechariah -- were said to live in the hill country of Judea. That is -- they did live in Judah ; the traditional land of David's tribe.

27 Mary was engaged to Joseph and it is very important that she was a virgin because if she had just been a young girl who had gotten pregnant it would not have been a miracle because this happens all the time. Jesus came to take our sins upon himself. so -- It's not strictly necessary that Mary be pure, except if you understand that Jesus flesh was drawn from her alone and that flesh had to be pure to fulfill the law.

It's an open question, for one can inherit sin from their mother;
Cf. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Psalm 50:7 ιδου γαρ εν ανομιαις συνελημφθην και εν αμαρτιαις εκ-ισση-σε/ν με η μητηρ μου (LXX).

Cf: Genesis 30:39,41 for the use-age of the same word -- eg: to conceive out of un-natural desire, cravings, or lusts of sin.
eg: Jacob who was using "Magic" (note, he did not "pray") to put the animals in rut ended up with animals that were ceremonially impure -- for they had speckles and spots, which is exactly what Jacob wanted for the sake of wealth. But these kinds of animals were also specifically the ones forbidden by Moses to be offered in the temple as sacrifices; Only lambs without blemish, speckle or spot, or broken bone, could be offered for sin.

Just so: For Jesus to be sure to be born without any taint of sin, It is a logical requirement that his mother had to be pure at the time he took flesh from her.
No mating in lust was to be allowed.

28 Mary was the one God chose to carry the Lord and His one Son, the One that would save the world.

I don't think scripture is in any way anti-woman! I think it often better than we are even now....

For, here in the united states we have not had a woman president -- even until now -- and it's our bias that comes from puritanical England.... but within scripture, we are told of a woman Judge/prophetess sent by God to bear rule over Israel as judge; cf: Judges 4:5. Deborah. That is far more pro woman than even our country has been willing to do !

Now, It is true that God held Deborah to a different standard than he did men, for God didn't allow the bloodshed of war be upon her hand -- rather God only allowed only a foreign woman to shed his blood (Sissera the sissy....). But none the less, women could rise in Israel in ways that may surprise you.

Just so, notice how Mary was startled by the Greeting of the Angel? The angel does not call her by name, but rather uses the Greek word "Hail!" (Chire = rejoice!/Hail!) -- That word is *ONLY* used within scripture in the vocative when referring to the greeting given to Caesar, the king.

I mean: Given the hundreds of hello's and goodbyes you can find in scripture, that word "Hail" is never used as a greeting (vocative case) except by the angel, and by the Roman Guards when mocking Jesus as "King of the Jews" -- John 19:3.

Think how strange that is! Nor is the word which follows it in Luke ( "Highly Favored" ) a normal word of greeting, ("Ke-charito-men-E") (eg:literally it means She-who-has-been-perfectly-graced ). It is in the perfect tense, exactly as Jesus' last words on the cross were when he pronounced the words so many take as assurance of salvation: "Te-Teles-tai"; "Perfectly Consummate!"

The perfect tense, in Greek, means something that is irrevocable for as long as the one who put it into effect exists. It is a word used by kings when they make a decree that is forever binding as long as their dynasty lasts.

Here, in Luke, Mary is listening to a message from God, who calls her not by her earthly name, but by a name made up out of the greeting to a king and a title meaning the perfection of grace. What more can be said, than "She believed, permanently, and pleasingly to God." ?

Mary had good reason to think carefully about those words of greeting from the angel, they were not used by ordinary people in ordinary greetings at any time in Israelite history; and here, they come from God who's reign is eternal.

I don't see that God or Godly men were against women in the Bible anywhere.
A woman in charge! Judging men, having authority over men? Surely not, we must be reading that incorrectly. God would never ordain that! :)
I also agree with you that the Reformation period did more to demean women in the Church than any other time period and it just continued on from there.

Huh? Continued on from there? Explain.

I see women being respected more now than at any other time in Western history. To a fault even.
