Bible Study Luke 1:78-79

Luke 1:78-79King James Version (KJV)
78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Luke 1:78-79Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
78 Because of our God’s merciful compassion,
the Dawn from on high will visit us
79 to shine on those who live in darkness
and the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.

78 The dawn from on high most likely refers to Jesus. Jesus coming is the greatest sign of God’s mercy on us. Jesus came so we could be saved. God knew needed a Savior and sent Him. This is mercy and grace. Jesus coming was God’s last and greatest visit thus far but is not His last He will return.

79 Christ came and set an example for us. He came to die so we might live by Him. He made a way for us to leave the darkness of this world and live in the light of God’s Word. We are made new because He died for the flesh, He allows us to die to flesh and live by Spirit.

I believe John the Baptist was announcing Jesus visiting Israel as a nation in this particular portion of scripture.

Luke 1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways.

Luke 1:78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us.

My thoughts.

I believe a more profound set of verses could not have been more appropriate to these current days.Where Wars just keep popping up regardless of the best efforts of Mankind to maintain an element of "peace" .These efforts are well intended make no mistake."
But I believe we should look at the ft note in KJV to what what God through Isaiah means by "peace" from Ish.9 :1-7..
v.5-7 "For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise , and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire."
I believe God's view and mortal man's views on "peace" differ totally. So called "peace accords" might as well be witten on tissue paper and thrown away after the meeting with rest of the waste, for what they are worth in most cases.

We see this element of "peacemaking" which differs from "peacekeeping" eg Matt: 5:9 " Blessed are the peacemakers , for they shall be called sons of God."
Rick Warren(Purpose Driven..)points this out that everybody loves peace ie "peacekeeping" but "peacemaking" is hard work going against the wind or grain in many cases.

The Zondervan Pastors Annual 1977 offer the following view in conclustion on this aspect of "peace" within the "sons of God" context. They include inter alia, a reference to Lk 1:79 "peace"
" One is not equipped to be a peacemaker until he is convicted of sin, poor in spirit , contrite for his sins, converted to God's will in full surrender which is the meekness of Christ, dedicated to hunger and thirst for what is right according to God(my bold) compassionate like Jesus, merciful, sincere in motive and purpose.

Happy, to be congratulated , blessed are the peacemakers, for they are cooperating with God in His glorious mission.
Do you know this Joy?
Are you at peace with God?
Are you a peacemaker?
Jesus says that this is the way to be happy."

John The Baptist's father in Luke 1 could not have been "less joyful " from a human perspective had he lived to see how his son was also sacrifised at the hand of Herod's wife and daughter. We see the courage that John displayed in going against the established ideas of "joy and peace".We see what "peacemaking" really entails in this hurly burly world of "greed".

Nice thoughts Clark on Bible poetry...

It is a contrasting parallel, light / dark shadow / death

Well, that's true. The verses you have there are the record of Zechariah's words upon the circumcision of his son John the Baptist in regards to the coming Jesus Christ and the purpose of John the Baptist.

These are some of the first words Zechariah spoke since he'd been speechless for some time, and the bible tells us prior to him speaking that he was filled with the holly spirit and began to prophesied.

So, in this prophesy, which are verses 68-79, Zechariah speaks on the coming Christ, the savior, and the announcement of Him to come, by John the Baptist. But as for His purpose, I would say that is more defined in verses 68-75.

68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors
and to remember his holy covenant,
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him without fear
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

The renaming verses are more about John the Baptist in light of God's salvation.

And you, my child, (John the Baptist) will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

Christ did far more than just come here to be an example to us. He did two things in regard to our salvation
1. He lived the life non of us can live
2. He died for our sins in place of us, paying a debt we can not pay.

Liked your thoughts Clarke on the Zachariah coming of Jesus

We can have confidence in he Second Coming because Zachariah speaks of the Third Coming of Jesus to earth..

During the Second Coming Jesus only gets as close as the atmosphere of earth, and does not physically touch the ground.
But during the third coming Jesus does touch the ground....

Zec 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

The mountain moves apart for a brand new city of Zion to come down...

Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

And GOD reigns on earth, with His throne and kingdom here....

Zec 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

In other places like Revelation, the wicked are raised and march against the city, but are destroyed...than all things are recreated and made new...

Clarke the book of Zachariah is most wonderful to study....

I love this verse:

Zec 13:6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

In heaven throughout eternity we stand in awe at the scars in Jesus hand, written here in prophecy before they were given to Jesus, before He became encapsulated into humanity, and even calling us friends is amazing....

It truly makes us humble and bow in awe....Like Thomas we will see the scars in his feet, and exclaim this is our Lamb who took away my sinning....

Shalom
