  • Focus on the Family

    Strengthening families through biblical principles.

Focus on the Family addresses the use of biblical principles in parenting and marriage to strengthen the family.

Luke 11:5

'Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; and from inside he answers and says 'Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.' I tell you, even tho he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.'

How come it says he will NOT get up and give him anything because he is his FRIEND.

Well human friendship is often limited or faulty..
The main message of this parable i believe is about being persistent in praying to God..
The friendship of God is .. Perfect..

How come it says he will NOT get up and give him anything because he is his FRIEND.
Hi Sister Winnie.
The following thought is given in the Study of Luke presented by Gene Hawkins on page 41.

If he gave simply because he was a friend, it would be equivalent to saying, "As a friend, you owe me." Some may come to God in this manner, but it is vitally important to know that God's blessings come to us purely on the basis of His grace. The only requirement is to ask. (Lk 11:8).

I tell you, even if he does not give him anything after he gets up because he is his friend, at any rate because of his impudence [shamelessness] he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

How come it says he will NOT get up and give him anything because he is his FRIEND.
That’s not the complete sentence.

The friend does give the bread because of his shamelessness. It’s the reason (the “because” of) for the asking AND the giving that’s being contrasted in this teaching:

In this illustration, it’s the asking friend that is being taught the reasons (the because) to ask and to give:

And he said to them, “Who of you will have a friend, and will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,

Therefore if you, although you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”
Luke 11:13 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Luke 11:13&version=LEB

The point is the motivation(s) one should give, not so much the giving.
