Bible Study Luke 2:25-28

Luke 2:25-28King James Version (KJV)
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
Luke 2:25-28Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
25 There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking forward to Israel’s consolation, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, he entered the temple complex. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for Him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took Him up in his arms, praised God, and said:

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

25 Simeon was a very common it was the name of one the tribes of Israel. This was not as common at that time we can see from the New Testament that the temple had become more about their look to Rome and making money. Simeon also looked for Israel to go back to its high, the days of Solomon was its highest. At that time the Spirit only came upon people and never dwelled with them or became apart of them.

26 The Spirit revealed things then and still does today, it is always in line with the scriptures though, and the Spirit will never have us do something scriptures say we should not. I don’t think he was expecting a baby whose family could not afford to buy a lamb.

27 The custom it is referring to is giving an offering. Simeon went where the Spirit guided him and was blessed by seeing Jesus, when we follow the Spirit we too will be blessed by seeing Jesus.

28 Following God will always end up bringing praise. God alone deserves our praise.

All Scripture is given for our edification. There is much to be learned from what is written about Simeon, who first blessed God, and then blessed Joseph, Mary and the child Jesus:

1. Simeon was a "just" man, which means that he had been justified by God's grace through faith in the coming Lamb of God. We are to be justified -- declared righteous -- in the same way.

2. Simeon was also a "devout" man, which means that he was careful to worship God, fear God, and obey God. We are to do the same.

3. Simeon was "waiting for the consolation of Israel" which means that he was waiting for the coming of Messiah (Maschiach). Christians are also to wait expectantly for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, who could come at any moment for His Church.

4. Simeon received a revelation from the Holy Ghost directly, whereas we receive revelations from the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. God reveals His truths to those who search the Scriptures daily. All that we need is to be found in the Holy Bible.

5. Simeon was told that he "should not see death" and believers are told by the Holy Spirit that they will not see eternal death -- eternal separation from God because they are in Christ. If the Rapture occurs during our lifetimes, we may not even see physical death.

6. Simeon prophesied regarding Messiah by the power of the Holy Spirit. Christians are to preach Christ and Him crucified, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

7. Simeon said "mine eyes have seen thy salvation". Christians are to always remember that the name "Jesus" is from the Hebrew Yahshua (Yeshua) which means "GOD OUR SALVATION".
