Luke 5:36-39 King James Version (KJV)
36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

Luke 5:36-39 Revised Standard Version (RSV)

36 He told them a parable also: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment; if he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, ‘The old is good.’”

36 People who have fixed clothes knows this that the cloth gets smaller after it is washed so to fix this people you wash the cloth before using it, Christ has to have us washed in His blood before we can be used to help fix the world.

37 The new wine expands the skins but the old wine skins had already been expanded so when the wine causes the container to expand it busts. This happens to many who try to serve the Lord but are never under the blood.

38 The new skins expand with the wine; God will give us more chances to serve as we grow in Him.

39 New wine has not yet had the yeast grow but old wine the yeast is fully grown. We are to fully grow thru Him and not on our own.

Dear Brother clark thompson, I cannot equal the teaching of my friend and brother in the Lord Gene Hawkins on this following excerpt form his study of Luke. Hopefully it gives insight to what you're seeking.

At this juncture, as was so often the case, the Great Master gave His critics more than they bargained for. He presented a parable to introduce the truth of the two creations, which truth He later unfolded fully to the Apostle Paul, for the Church. "No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old" (5:36). The Pharisees were trying desperately to "patch up" the old garment with all their works which could be seen by others. Jesus was telling them, "You need to become a completely new garment, or new creature." Anything short of this only "maketh a rent," or makes the problem more apparent.

"And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish" (5:37). The new wine, the power of the Holy Spirit, was poured out on the Day of Pentecost, and can never be contained in the old bottle of the flesh. Only the new creation is made to receive this new and powerful "Wine." The final verse reinforces the large gulf which exists between the flesh and the spirit:

"No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, the old is better" (5:39). The flesh does not even desire the New Wine of the Holy Ghost, let alone receive it. Paul stated it perfectly in Romans 8:17: "The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be."

Blessings in Christ Jesus. :wave2

Jesus gave us explicit directions on "how" to understand every parable. This dictate is found in Mark 4, specifically rendered in vs. 13.

The basic format is this. In every parable there are 3 components. God, man and the devil(s.)

IF these 3 basic components are missing in any scriptural parable dissection, then the understanding is either partial or void. The same principle applies to understanding all allegories, similitudes and metaphors that are in the scriptures.

Parable lesson 101. Lesson 102 is found in Matt. 4:4 and Luke 4:4. Every Word of God applies to every one of us. Violating this principle also makes any understanding partial or void. Often when believers read parables they apply only one side of the parable to themselves and can not accept the whole enchilada, personally. VOID.

Jesus gave a parable about the old garment and old bottle which represents our old sin nature. When we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior through repentance, John 3:3-6; Romans 10:9, 10, this created a new Spiritual inner man and old things are passed away (sin) and remembered no more by God and all things become new once again. You have two masters you can choose to serve as one is God and the other is self. If we have truly died to self (old garment, old bottle) and serve God then he clothes us in his robe of righteousness and we drink from the new bottle from the fountain of living water. There is no fence riding when it comes to our relationship with Jesus. You either trust him in all things or you deny him in all things. You can not put a new piece of garment on an old piece as it ruins the new garment if you cut into it. (Note: wine bottles were made from the hide of animals and if used to much the hide would wear out and split.)

A Better understanding of these meanings or parables of Christ can be better understood in (2 Cor. 5:17) (Luke 5:39). Those under the Old Covenant said is is better and are slow to accept the New Covenant. You can not attach the OC to the NC. For the NC is stronger than the OC and will not make it whole, but instead, replaces it. You can not put the NC Spirit into the OC vessel because it will be subject to the influence of Satan and looses interest. But you put the NC of the Spirit into a new vessel (you must be born gain) and then both are preserved (a new man) (2 Cor. 5:17) And while some want to keep the OC because they think it is better (Luke 5:39) our nakedness is only covered by the NC. For the OC is fading away (Heb. 8:13)

A Better understanding of these meanings or parables of Christ can be better understood in (2 Cor. 5:17) (Luke 5:39).
A new dispensation is at hand. Patching an old garment with laws was akin to attempting to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear; the law could do no more than show their lack.

Secondly the Holy Spirit could not fill the old flesh, but inhabit new vessels of righteousness born of God.

Rom 8:7 says it like this: the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Agreed.
