Jonah 2:8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
One of the greatest truths about life is realized while Jonah was in the belly of the great fish. Nine words that, once understood, will change your life. But you have to work a little to get the meanings of these words, as understood in King James English. Meanings of words change over time. For example the word vanity today could mean a bedroom dresser or make-up table. Using the mirror could be considered observing a lying vanity; because it shows a made-up (not real) face.
That said, I am going to give some guidelines and ask you to explain it.
1. Grab a dictionary and look up the key words in the verse. They are observe, lying, vanities, forsake, and mercies.
2. Now that you understand the full meanings of the words, what is a lying vanity?
3. What was the lying vanity Jonah was observing?
4. How was Jonah forsaking his own mercy?
(Read Jonah and notice the realization and response.)
Now that we understand it a little, how can we apply this to our lives? I welcome your responses. May God bless,
Taz
By the way, for those believers locked in the seemingly eternal argument, predestination or free will, Jonah is great example of both being true.
I believe that both are true.
