I don't think it's a good idea to downgrade God to a mere "designer." He is the Creator, not a "maybe a space alien" as the IDers have it. God created the universe to unfold as He intended it to. Hence, life was produced by non-living matter, with the capacity to change over time to adapt to different environments.
 
God designed some amazing glow-in-the-dark creatures that make their own light.
