Makers of Life of Brian were disrespectful to Jesus?

I have to be honest. I really enjoyed Life of Brian at the time. I was young and atheistic .This was a movie made in the late 70s by John Cleese and some other British comedians. Cleese defends his movie by saying it is about the life of Brian not the life of Jesus. Critics will say that is a weak defence as it obviously about Jesus and his life ministry. The movie does satirical scenes of the Sermon on the Mount, the miracles and the Crucifixion for example.
But now I am having second thoughts. I really do think the makers of Life of Brian lacked something. They don't "get" holiness. And this is a problem for a lot of atheists. They don't understand holiness and deep spirituality. That the scene of the crucifixion is at the same time an awful event but also a holy one. A Christian might say you need the Holy Spirit to understand. Christians who are really in love with Jesus Christ and God, understand the Crucifixion. Love and sacrifice.
I don't pretend to be Holy. But I truly respect Christians who are. To live a prayerful life. An intimate prayerful life. Some people are really in love with JC. it is not fiction.
The movie makers were accused of being Judases. Doing the movie for 30 pieces of silver. Getting a laugh and big ,money for it was all they cared about. One critic said "Your movie will be forgotten soon but Jesus Christ will never be forgotten."

I remember visiting a Benedictine Monastery. I got into a converstion with an older woman at Dinner who happened to be atheist. I shared to her that I might have been interested in being a monk in my earlier days. She scoffed, "oh don't become like those poor old sods praying in this monastery. Don't waste your life!"
That was another example. Unspiritual people don't get it. They think prayer is a waste of time. Their brains cant think outside what is tangible and in front of them. They think Christians are losers.

I've been amazed at how there are two basic world views when it comes to God. It's amazing because the two views look at the same world and see it so differently.

One is that it's obvious that God exists. Just look at the world around us. The other is that it's impossible for God to exist; or at the very least they are blind to the things that point to God.

I need to see Mel Gibson's movie on jesus Christ. One reason I have postponed seeing it is that is apparently graphic in its violence. Not sure I want to watch that. But still maybe I need to?

I have not seen the “Life of Brian”.
But obviously the life of Jesus, His death, and resurrection are not something that can be captured adequately in a movie, even one that intends to honor Him. And a movie that is a kind of satire of Christ can’t be powerful enough to harm His power, or the effectiveness of the gospel.
The more threatening things are those that twist the Gospel enough to ruin it, and look real and appealing.
Things like the prosperity gospel.
I wouldn’t encourage people to see the Life of Brian, but doing that would probably not be worse for them than listening to a clever charlatan “preacher”.

Sounds like you've got personal bad experiences of the prosperity Gospel. Joel Osteen related?

I haven’t personally been affected. I was fortunate that I came to Christ at 24 within a church that was sound doctrinally and big on grace.
I am just aware of these things primarily by reading and alert to when I hear touches of it even in messages of usually good preachers.

I saw that movie when it came out and liked it at the time. I don't remember the details so it is possible I wouldn't like it now. It very emotional left me speechless for awhile.
What amazes me is how they can find anyone willing to play the part of Jesus. Who would dare to think they qualified for such a role? Who would not cringe at the very idea of Jesus being portrayed by a mere mortal, of Him and His life and tHis work being acted. To me there seems something almost blasphemous about it. Showing my age I guess.
