Male Lactation

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, and thought that this might be a good place...

Tell me what you think...

I first became interested in male lactation in 1978 after reading Dana Raphael's book, The Tender Gift: Breastfeeding. Although Raphael only dealt with the subject briefly, she did say that men can and have produced milk after stimulating their nipples.

While my husband David had no interest in nursing our son, we both were intrigued with the idea. We had just had our first unassisted homebirth and were excited about applying our positive thinking techniques to other aspects of our lives. Although Raphael had written about milk production through nipple stimulation, perhaps, we thought, David could do it simply through suggestion. He began telling himself that he would lactate, and within a week, one of his breasts swelled up and milk began dripping out. When we excitedly showed my father (a physician) David's breast he said, "Obviously there's something physiologically wrong with David." The fact that David had willed himself to do this, did not impress him. We knew, however, that this was yet another example of the power of the mind.

Still, we were not ready for David to actually breastfeed our baby. First of all, there was no need for it. I was doing just fine on my own. But more importantly, he simply had no desire to do it. After he discovered that his body had indeed been responsive to his thoughts, he suggested to himself that the lactation would stop, and within a week his breast returned to normal. The experiment had been a success.

We didn't give it much thought after that until years later when I came across a short article called "Male Lactation" by Professor Patty Stuart Macadam of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto (Compleat Mother, Fall, 1996, Volume 43).

It is possible, and has been observed in animals and humans. In 1992, 18 Dayak fruit bats were captured from a rainforest in the Krau Game Reserve, Pahang, Malaysia. Of the 10 mature males captured, each had functional mammary glands from which small amounts of milk were expressed. A breast is a breast. Male lactation is physiologically possible and, according to Dr. Robert Greenblatt, production in males can be stimulated by letting a baby suckle for several weeks. Indeed some human males secrete milk at birth and at puberty.Historically, male lactation was noted by the German explorer Alexander Freiherr von Humboldt prior to 1859, who wrote of a 32-year-old man who breastfed his child for five months. It was also observed in a 55-year-old Baltimore man who had been the wetnurse of the children of his mistress.

My interest in male lactation was piqued again when I recently received the following letter from a friend of mine.

I knew these two wonderful guys, very dear friends of mine for years. A mutual acquaintance of ours was pregnant, unplanned, and did not want to do the whole "adoption thing" so when the guys approached her about taking the baby, they just proceeded as if it had been a planned surrogate pregnancy. The guys were adamant that the baby should get breastmilk. So when she was in her 7th month we bought a really good quality breastpump and Ian started pumping, every 2 hours during the day and once during the night. He was wonderful about it! He used an SNS (supplimental nursing system) after she was born, with donated milk from several friends who were nursing. He was making milk but not a full supply. By the time the baby was 12 weeks old he was making a full milk supply! He stayed at home with the baby (he was a massage therapist) and nursed her exclusively until she was 8 months old!! I don't think many people outside their intimate circle knew about it, I'm sure folks would have had a fit if they'd known...but I thought it was wonderful!

While reading my friend's letter, I suddenly remembered my mother telling me years ago that as an infant I once tried to nurse on my father. I laughed about it at the time, yet I'm sure it is a fairly common occurrence. Babies want to be loved, nursed, and nurtured. The gender of the person doing it is not important.

On the other hand, I think it is safe to say that women are better suited to breastfeeding than men are. They generally produce milk soon after birth, with little or no nipple stimulation. If a mother is completely out of the picture, however, as in the case of adoption, or a mother goes back to work and a baby is left in the care of its father, for some families male breastfeeding might be an acceptable alternative to formula bottles and pacifiers.

For those who claim male lactation is "unnatural," I would have to ask: how natural is canned formula from Nestle' or pacifiers made from petrolium byproducts? If milk production in men were truly unnatural, it wouldn't exist. The fact that it does, leads me to believe that perhaps male lactation is simply nature's back-up system. In any case, it's an interesting phenomenon.

I'm sure we must have some men who have breast fed their children around here somewhere. :lol: ;-) :crazyeyes:

Absentee mothers can choose to breast pump and bottle the milk for future use. Hey, I'm very old-fashioned; it's called "mother's milk" for a reason. 8-) Men provide the sperm and woman provide the egg and the milk.

:smt017 That doesn't quite sound right. :smt104

Wow! I didn't think this was a serious post until I found this :-?

Benefits of Male Lactation
The advantages of male lactation are many. For starters, male lactation would promote a type of emotional bonding between father and child that is now available only to the mother and child. In addition, it would provide many of the benefits that a child often misses in the absence of breastfeeding, such as a stronger immune system and decreased disease susceptibility. In the first world, most mothers choose not to breastfeed, either for career purposes, illnesses, failure to breastfeed, or lack of interest; male lactation could potentially fill this role.

I don't think I'd give it a try just because... but hey, in this day and age sombody might. :wink:

All in al it's very interesting. I would have never guessed!

No offense to anyone, but I'm extremely leery of all this. It's creating a cross gender role that was designed by our Creator from the beginning.

Hey, call me old-fashioned again, but the roles of mother and father have worked quite successfully for thousands and thousands of years now. I fear and dread the day when "grown" men will be sitting around discussing whether or not they breastfed the children. :shocked!:

I guess that in a situation where the wife dies in childbirth, and the father wants the child to have breast milk, it could work. At least the child would still have the benefits of breast milk.

I think our society is doing all it can to feminize and pervert the role of men. This has got to be one of the most ridiculous ones yet.

For me, I just thought is was amazing that men could produce milk :-D I knew that a woman could "will" the production of milk, but I had no idea that a male could also "will" with a bit of stimulation.

As far as cross gender roles, I can see your point Vic. Could you imagine a bunch of males sitting around a table discussing breast feeding :crazyeyes:

Yeah, so how's it going Fred? Say, what do you think about them Red Wings?

There seems to be a trend to mix and match genders to whatever suits one's preference. If you don't like who you are then change that. And of course there's the trend toward homogenization that no matter who you are you will be equal in all and everything.
I've been seeing a new phrase lately... "gender presentation" in which one's gender is judged by how you present yourself, male female or whatever in between. It's this "gender presentation" that is the fuel that seems to be governing which restroom one uses.
We've seen the argument "I was born this way." or "I'm wired this way" or "God created me as I am.". But on the other side of the coin we have, "I don't like the way I was made so I'll change that because I can".
OK, which is it? One argument is used if one doesn't want to change and the other if one does.

And a question a bit off-topic:
If I'm a male and I like women does that make me a lesbian trapped in a man's body? :smt017
:-D

Hi ya'll~

Well, this is the very argument that I used as proof that the male and female roles are specifically designed by God for humanity with my sister, who denies them as a lesbian. She claims that without societal pressures men would take on the female role if society did not frown on it. While I noted that a man and woman on a dessert island would take on their roles given by God because the man could not feed the child~ etcetera.

Guess this weird new phenomena has just blown my argument out of the water. Which proves further that no one may be brought to salvation except thru faith in Christ alone. No reasoning, by itself, is of any consequence in salvation.

Lord help this planets woeful peoples who are sowing deceit into the most natural functions of God's creation. May truth reign anew, and souls be won to Christ still. :)

It's all a matter of accepting who you are and being totally honest with self-appraisal. It's the essence of repentance. But I suppose people focus much more on the carnal than on the spiritual. Yes, we've gained in knowledge, science, technology, etc. but I believe that was at the expense of the spiritual being.

I have heard of instances where men who were stranded at sea would lactate from dehydration, but it was only a little bit. Personally, I think it is sick that a man would want to breastfeed a child. It's as though he's pretending to be something he's not, and never will be no matter what kind of surgery he has. This is just another example of perversion of the natural laws established by God. 1Corinthians 6:9 compares being "effeminate" with aldultery and homosexuality.

If I'm a male and I like women does that make me a lesbian trapped in a man's body?
Or if a woman likes men, is she a homoxual male trapped in a womans body?

Sheesh, we better not even kid around with that stuff or it might be the next depravity to slide down the pipe. :o

If I'm a male and I like women does that make me a lesbian trapped in a man's body?
LOL! My Manager used to kid and say that often. A while back, we had a couple of lesbians working here. He used to kid with them, saying, "Hey, I like women too, does that make me a lesbian? " :-D :oops:

Can I assume this topic has lost it's focus? If so, I will gladly return to the OP and say very simply, I am NOT breast feeding any future Child God blesses me with unless it's in the terms of a nice and tasty Chicken breast. Then I will probably feed my future kids with several breast, possibly in each meal. :)

Why is it that our culture wants the men to be mommies too?

Why is it that our culture wants the men to be mommies too?

I think that Satan is using a tactic now of emasculating men in order to weaken both families and the church.

Hey ya~

These ideas are so ludicrous, to minds that have been enlightened, that we tend to laugh because we sense of the bizzare; Things so unfit to reality that our eyes widen and our mouths tilt into half-smiles just trying to conceptualize them. I instinctively want to laugh~ just to protect my plummeting heart each time I hear some new fantasy foisted on humanity as reality. :roll:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seriously thou it would be wise for us to pray~~~ Every role designed by our Heavenly Father is being usurped, that is the way of the enemy. Confusion is his other ploy, the unsaved become more confused with every lie they swallow. :crying:
They are continually told all they have to solve the mysteries of life is in this temporary and limited universe. For those of us who have reached (by God's grace) outside of creation and found the answers in Jesus Christ, mockery and persecution awaits.
Self actualization has always been the lie humanity from the ages has so easily bought into. To be as God, Eve bit the forbidden fruit~ today the forbidden fruit is still the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life.
God help them to turn from this rotting fruit, to taste its evil poison, before they are completely turned over to it. May they be delievered out of darkness and into the love of God's Son Jesus Christ. In His name, amen. bonnie
...Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:
Who changed the truth of God into a lie
, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. Romans 1:24-25
