More accurately, fundamentalists CLAIM to adhere to the bible but are quite selective how they apply it. Fundamentalism arose in the late 1800s in response to modernity but especially to Darwin's theories. The rise of Christian and Islamic fundamentalism, and Jewish Ultra-Orthodoxy, is chronicled in the book
The Battle for God by Karen Armstrong. Armstrong characterize it as an attempt to remove the mystical elements of religion and replace them with elements of pure logic, characterized by strict interpretation of ancient scriptures.
BTW, you do no service to Christianity by whining about supposed insults to your religion and then going on to insult someone else's; when you do that you come off as a hypocrite and a bully.
