There is a new Mandy Moore movie "Saved." I haven't seen it but I am planning to. The previews look funny, but some people are saying that it has an anti-Christian message. I have two questions. First, what is the anti Christian message and Secondly, is it ok to go see a movie that is anti-Christian to understand the prejudice of others?
 
In my opinion, I say who cares? I knew atheists who went and saw The Passion just out of curiosity sake. They're still atheists though. Did they not have a right to go see it? I know many Christians who thought Dogma was hilarious. I say watch what you want to watch. Just be rest assured there will always be some fundies who will get their granny panties in a bunch over it.

You might try to learn what fundementalism is, you clearly have no idea. It means only that we adhear to the teaching of the bible, which became neccary in the later part of the 1800 with the up rise of liberlism that said we can live how ever we FEEL we should.

You are using it as an isultive word which shows an ignorance and also a lack of tollorance on your part.

At least we are not wishy willy and living in a fantacy world like, hmmm lets see the wiccan are. Or those silly neo pagans, LOL those folks are loved by God that is to be sure, but man are they out of it.
 
I heard a review that the movie blasts hypocracy more than faith. It also pokes fun at peple that believe and never question. (I saw the previews where a guy in a wheelchair is telling a girl painting a picture of Jesus, that Jesus was probably not white.)

I think it'll be hilarious. Part of the trailer had Moore throwing a Bible at another girl and screaming, "I am FULL of Christ's love!"
 
I seen a thing on MTV about it, and it seemed to me to be sterotypical of Christians. THe Christian girls I know are not like the girl in this movie. Believe it or not, we know Jesus wasn't white.
 
LOL yea we do not think that Jesus was white, actuall we think of him as being transendant to any skin color, he is God after all.

Anyways, the more I hear about this movie the more that I am sure that I am not going to be interested in seeing it.

By the way, this only shows that unbelievers have not idea what we actually do beleive and have the same old worn out and wrong sterotypes about us, sad really that they would be so biggoted.

More accurately, fundamentalists CLAIM to adhere to the bible but are quite selective how they apply it. Fundamentalism arose in the late 1800s in response to modernity but especially to Darwin's theories. The rise of Christian and Islamic fundamentalism, and Jewish Ultra-Orthodoxy, is chronicled in the book The Battle for God by Karen Armstrong. Armstrong characterize it as an attempt to remove the mystical elements of religion and replace them with elements of pure logic, characterized by strict interpretation of ancient scriptures.

BTW, you do no service to Christianity by whining about supposed insults to your religion and then going on to insult someone else's; when you do that you come off as a hypocrite and a bully.
 
We saw it Saturday and it was great. Mandy Moore was great as a complex, vulnerable villian who does not see herself as such.

It was an excellent exploration of conservative christian culture and pro-life in the sense the pregnant girl played by Jenna Malone never considered any other option besides carrying her pregnancy to term, yet not preachy about it.
 
Does the gay guy get a lot of screen time, Texas Lynn?

As a side note, I can't wait for Brokeback Mountain. Jake Gyllenhaal is hott.

Texas, Just because Armstorng threw a rok in the ocean and made some wave does not proof all the waves came from her rock. I am sure that some may have arose as you said, but what you sterotype as fundamentalist came from the second great awakening where many people returned to faith in Jesus as the guiding principle of their life.

Secondly, I have suffered those supposed insults, and you do no service to the freedom of religion by ignoring that Christianity is the only group that it is acceptable to discriminate against. Just because you can't see, does not mean its not happening.

Not true. Many people were heavily involved in Christianity and the church and broke away from it. It's like being in a bad relationship. Everyone else on the outside can see how screwed up it is, but the person in the relationship is blinded to all of that. Same with Christianity. We outsiders know alot more about what goes on in Christian circles than you would think.
 
I just saw SAVED this weekend and I enjoyed it immensely! A large part of that is because I appreciate films that allow discourse on Christian beliefs...I don't care if I get there because it was a spoof on Christianity. Not to mention, I firmly agree with the message of the film, one that is against hypocrisy, not religion. This movie's theme is one of understanding and acceptance, things that are very prevalent in Christianity and open the doors for a conversation on what we do believe and don't believe. I think everyone should go with a friend who doesn't know much about the Christian faith. Afterwards, through discussion and sharing, we can all open our mind a bit!
 
Can't Judge it till you see it

It upsets me how many fellow Christians (like Henry) have judged this movie before they have even seen it. Some people have the idea that it creates a stereo type of Christians which it does not. The movie stereotypes and makes fun of people who believe and do not question. These are not the type of Christians I know. What do you think?

Sure some people are anti Christian...but most of the stereotypes were brought on by the way some of the most outspoken Christians acted
 
Does this review accurately identify factual elements of the film (regardless of whether or not you agree with the reviewer's analysis)?

If true, I'm a bit surprised by Mandy Moore's involvement with the film. I was led to believe she would not have condoned such a portrayal of Christianity.

Not really. He's not included with the five main characters together with Jesus and a skateboard in the film poster. Those are Mandy Moore asthe mean girl, Jenna Malone as the Pregnant Girl, Macaulay Culkin as Mandy Moore's brother who's in a wheelchair, the guy who's the pastor's son who's a "skateboarder for Jesus", and the only Jewish girl in the school who's also a hoodlum.

As a side note, I can't wait for Brokeback Mountain. Jake Gyllenhaal is hott.

I don't believe that. I've never been discriminated against as a Christian. When people indicate negative perceptions of Christians, 99.99999 percent of the time what they go on to describe is the actions of Christian fundamentalists, not Christians in general.

I've never seen anyone criticize Red Skelton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Patricia Heaton, John Glenn, or Reba McEntire for being Christians, because they are not known to behave badly and attribute it to their faith.

I believe the writer for the movie mentioned that he went to a Christian school. He said he wrote it in a Christian school setting because people told him 'write what you know about.'"
