Bible Study Mark 5, the woman who bled

I would like to do a small study on the woman who had been bleeding for many years without a cure as told in mark 5. Unless noted otherwise, I’ll be using the Net Bible.

Net Bible Mark 5:25-34 Now a woman was there who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years. She had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet instead of getting better, she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she kept saying, “If only I touch his clothes, I will be healed.†At once the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Jesus knew at once that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?†His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you and you say, ‘Who touched me?’†But he looked around to see who had done it. Then the woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your disease.â€

From first glance, this looks pretty simple, but what I’ve found, and hope to share is that there is a lot going on here just under the surface, and I’d like to explore some of that. Now, to start with, I want to address the culture and widely accepted doctrines of the day. Note, this isn’t a study on what I’m about to post, but simply, it’s used by way of example.

John 9:1-2 Now as Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man or his parents?â€

The first question I have is, why do these deciples believe that this man was born in sin? Where did this idea come from? Well, if we read the account in John, we find out that this teaching came from the religious leaders, and not only that, but the leaders who professed to know the scriptures, and keep the scriptures as attested by their own words.

John 9:34 They replied, “You were born completely in sinfulness, and yet you presume to teach us?†So they threw him out.

If you dig a bit deeper as to why they believed this, I would assume that it comes from two passages in Exodus which speak of Generational sin which have been improperly discerned. These verses can be found in Exodus 20:5 and Exodus 34:7

But what I want us to take with us into this study from John 9, is that it was readily accepted (although not true) that if one had an ailment or disability, it was due to sin and those with disabilities, or afflicted by disease were commonly rejected as sinners in need of repentance.

With this in mind, lets not look at this portion.
Now a woman was there who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years. She had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet instead of getting better, she grew worse

We see that this woman had suffered with this physical issue for 12 years. As a male, I can’t relate to having a period each month, but I know the inconvenience that it causes women each month. I couldn’t imagine how inconvenient this would be for 12 years. While were looking at this, the text says that she was hemorrhaging, so we know that we’re talking about a lot of blood here, and it had to take it’s toll on her physically simply by the loss of blood each day... and through the years, it only got worse.

So add to this physical suffering, and pile the social implications as well. She would have been viewed falsly as a grave sinner within her community and she would have been shunned. The fact that she had went to the doctors and she only got worse would confirm that she was in dire need of repenting of her sins. Take into account that she had spent all she had, which meant that she was now poor, and it only added to the confirmation of the people that she was being punished by God for her sin.

So we see that she had a physical issue, but she also was suffering emotionally as well. I’m not sure about you, but it sounds like a horrible way to live. But before we think this is all of her suffering, there is one more thing that she suffers from, and it comes from the Law.

NIV: Lev 15:20-27 “‘Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean. Anyone who touches her bed will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who touches anything she sits on will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. Whether it is the bed or anything she was sitting on, when anyone touches it, they will be unclean till evening.

“‘If a man has sexual relations with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days; any bed he lies on will be unclean.

“‘When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period. Any bed she lies on while her discharge continues will be unclean, as is her bed during her monthly period, and anything she sits on will be unclean, as during her period. Anyone who touches them will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.

Read this a few times and you'll begin to see the implications of how this woman lived for 12 years. Let your mind wander on this and I'm sure we could fill up pages of what it may be like to live with those types of boundries in our lives. It would have been horrible for 12 years day in and day out... I couldn't imagine... I know that we, as humans love physical touch, but this woman was shunned from physical touch; had she ever been caressed by a man? Did she yearn for the days past when her father held her close in his arms? We don't know if she was married or not, or if she had children, but how would you deal with the desire to bear children, yet no man would want to touch you? Every where you sat became 'unclean', and others couldn't sit there. You'd be alienated, alone... an outcast and your self esteem crushed. And you dare not reach out to anyone and touch them, lest they become unclean... which brings me to this part of the story.

His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”

How many people did she touch making her way to Jesus?... Do you think they would be appreciative of her for touching them and making them all unclean? How would you respond if somebody had made you unclean? At the least, you would be inconvenienced for the evening...

I want to look a little bit at this portion.

When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she kept saying, “If only I touch his clothes, I will be healed.â€

Now imagine, this woman would not have been able to go into the Temple and worship God, and her community would have rejected her as both a sinner, and as one who was unclean. But look what she does, she risks being found out by all them that she touches while making her way to Jesus to be healed of her bleeding. And this brings me to 2 main points. First, she never lost her love for God, even after all she endured. Second, she had the idea that by simply touching the 'clothes' of Jesus, she would be healed. Where did that idea come from?

Let's take a look at this passage for a moment,
Net Bible: Malachi 4:2 But for you who respect my name, the sun of vindication will rise with healing wings, and you will skip about like calves released from the stall.

Within the Jewish faith, this verse points to when the Messiah would come, and as we see, they believed that there was healing in his wings. Now, wings in the original Hebrew also means the edge of a garment, so what we see, is affirmation that this woman Loved YHVH, and by touching the edge of the clothes of Jesus, she was affirming that He was the Messiah. Hold on to the rest of this verse which talks about skipping around like a calve released from it's pin, because we'll be coming back to it.

I love this part :)

Jesus knew at once that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”

Do we really think that Jesus didn't know who touched him, or was there something bigger going on here? I think something bigger was going on, so c'mon, lets go exploring :)

John 1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed, “Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 1:48 Nathanael asked him,How do you know me?” Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 1:49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!” 1:50 Jesus said to him, “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 1:51 He continued, “I tell all of you the solemn truth – you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Or how about this account?
John 4:16 He said to her, “Go call your husband and come back here.” 4:17 The woman replied, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Right you are when you said, ‘I have no husband,’ 4:18 for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!

Jesus knew who touched him... now all we have to do is find out why he called her out... but before we do that, lets look at this.

Then the woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.

Then the woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.

Look at her response... she was in dire fear with trembling because she knew that she had been healed for her physical issue. But we see that she was not kicking, as a calf released from her pin. No, she was still suffering from the years of emotional abuse she had incurred through the years.

Years of turmoil, and years of abuse has a way of taking away a part of our humanity. In this case, this woman would have lived a life of solitude, alone and outcast not knowing, yet yearning for acceptance, or a simply touch. At least the lepers could congregate... When you live like this, you're not really living, and I don't think God wants us to live like that. You see, she knew she was healed, but she tried to sneak away... to get back to her comfort zone, that solitude place that offered her comfort and safety from those who mocked her, or falsely accused her.

Jesus didn't allow that. No, he called her out and brought her before the community. He showed not only her, but the rest of the world that He cared for her, and that he accepted her. You see, by calling her out, it brought her in front of the crowd, but instead of being mocked, she was accepted and brought back into community. You see, Jesus doesn't only want to save us, he wants to transform our lives, and bring us back into community.

But he did something else, you see, she had been healed, but she also did something that would be on her conscience the rest of her life. Remember when the crowds were pressing against Jesus? How many people were considered "unclean"? You see, she told everyone the "Whole Truth", and I believe that those who were unclean because she touched them would have to come to terms with this... and I have to believe that many of them forgave her in the presence of Jesus.. in the presence of God. But it's more than just that. Yes, these people would have felt what she felt like for one day until they became 'clean' again, so maybe, just maybe they would begin to identify with how she spent 12 years of her life and I'm left asking the question, "How many times has our lives been inconvenienced by others, just to show us their sufferings". And do we show compassion toward these people? Compassion.. something this woman surely yearned for, and would finally receive.

Truly, this would have been cause for great rejoicing for a woman of her affliction to hear those wonderful words, or maybe even to be embraced for the first time from other people, and I'm sure that when she left Jesus, instead of slinking away through the crowd like she once did, then scripture was true when it was prophesied in Malichi,

and you will skip about like calves released from the stall.

For as Jesus said,

KJV: 34And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Jesus doesn't just want to save one part of you, he wants to save ALL of you :thumbsup

I hope this has blessed you today!

Excellent study!

She relied on pure faith rather than the law, and was healed.

I also find it interesting that Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue was taking Jesus to heal his 12 year old daughter; and along the way a woman is healed who had this blood issue for 12 years.

What is the significance of 12 years?
I'm not sure. But I did notice that a specific time amount of 12 years was mentioned in both cases.

Excellent catch Sissy on the 12 years and I agree that there is probably something there. Honestly, I could take a guess, but that's all it would be so I'll just sit on my hands before I go making stuff up :lol

Another member sent me a PM and also caught something that I missed and I'd like to post a portion of what he wrote. I want to keep him anonymous while keeping to our TOS that we don't post PM's so I think I'm ok to post this part.

Then she touched the hem of his garment, appropriated the healing in his wings, if you will. Her fear and trembling could have resulted from her realization that she had made the Messiah unclean by her selfish need.

"Oh my GOD! What have I done???"

The Good Physician replied to her, calling her his daughter. She was healed, not only physically from the hidden touch, but made whole, from His embrace.

What an awesome thought!
