Marxism and Christianity

An uneasy partnership. As Marx famously declared in Das Kapital 'Religion is the opiate of the people'. For the benefit of any transatlantic readers, I ought to state at the outset that, though my politics are left of centre, I am neither a communist nor a Marxist. But it does strike me that his ideal 'From each according to his ability, to each according to his need' is entirely consistent with our faith. Where Marx and I part company is that he thought this epithet should be enforced by the state, and I do not. But I wonder if you have any comments to share?

Best wishes to all, 2RM.

Marxism can ONLY work in a utopian environment where everyone and I mean EVERYONE is completely on board and has no selfish motives. But where there is even a little of self-serving or trying to get ahead, it falls apart. Since we are a fallen race and live in a fallen world, marxism, along with all the other utopian philosophies, cannot survive long term.

Ah Utopia! That would be good. But I think we need first to define it, in a consensual sort of way. Thus, we would at least all know what we are trying to achieve for our children, and theirs.

Best wishes, 2RM.

human nature ,look at your local church and see how well or poorly its supported to see.

Marxism thinks that all the capital means of production (machines, properties etc) should be owned by the state, on behalf of the people. I would prefer that they were owned by people, on behalf of people. Nevertheless, there are some people so poor under capitalism that it disgraces us all. If the system could answer this, directly, I would be far more inclined toward it. Meanwhile, I tend towards a capitalist economy overseen by a moderately socialist political government.

Best wishes, 2RM.
