Hi: I am new to this forum. I am not a Christian. I have some questions regarding the Christian concept of Jesus being the messiah. Is this a topic that you would be willing to discuss on this forum.
Christians believe Jesus was the Messiah because the NT says he is. That is the long and short of it. As we've seen on the other thread, challenging the Messiahship of Jesus through examining the context of the original OT passages (claiming fulfillment in the NT) has little effect - it
should, but it doesn't, because the NT says the particular prophecy
did apply to Jesus and
was fulfilled by him.
The deeper issue here is what is the evidence that the NT is a continuation of the Hebrew scriptures? Was there even supposed to
be another "testament" according to the Tenach? But I'm not trying to sabotage your question - I, for one, would like to read your pinpointing of the problems with the Christian interpretations of these prophecies, as I can tell from the other thread you have a good grasp of the subject. It's just that I'm pretty sure that's where the discussion is going to end up...
"It's fulfilled in Jesus because the NT says so"
Now if folks would agree to the stipulation, beforehand, that because the NT says a certain prophecy was fulfilled is not, in and of itself, a valid argument, that the fulfillment of the prophecy must be shown to be consistent with the context of the original prediction in the Tenach,
then things could get interesting
