Bible Study Mining the Minor Prophets

M

It's hit me in prayer for 2 days now that many Christians don't read the 'Old Testament' as they think that title means it's obsolete

A classic phrase that Bible teachers use to unite the Bible - as it's meant to be - is...

"The New is in the Old concealed..

& the Old is in the New revealed!"

But many who love Psalms, Proverbs, the history books, law books & poetry baulk at the Prophets

& even many who love the Major Prophets ignore the Minor Prophets, so it's vital to say that 'Minor' does not mean insignificant: it only means that those books are substantially shorter than Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel & Zechariah

But their messages are just as vital - especially as so much of Bible prophecy shows - just as clear as lightning crosses the sky & just as dramatically as labour pains grip a mother-to-be - that we are in the climax generation of all history, that will see Messiah return

Last 2/3 times I've 'sat on the throne' (if you pardon a Brit euphemism!), I've read 1/2 of the 'Minor Prophets' each time

To save missing autologout, I'll post this now & yahoo online Bible Handbook, online Bible commentaries & Minor Prophets overview

& to save exceeding recommended post length, I'll paste results in a reply

I'll close by encouraging you that I've been greatly blessed, these past 2 days, by using my Life Application Study Bible to re-read Habakkuk, Haggai, Nahum & Zephaniah

In this soundbite generation, the fact that each is just 2/3 chapters means some readers will be so gripped & thrilled by seeing God's Word come true

Did you hear Jonathan - the guy @ http://www.IsraelVoice.org today?

Encouraging Christians to ask for a book or 2 on how to share the gospel with Jews, emphasising we can't not do, as the Bible says the gospel is 'to the Jew first, also to the nations'

Must start a thread on Leviticus 23 @ the gospel in the Feasts of Israel

http://www.IsraelVision.com may have been the one saying they'll cover the 40 days of preparation before Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) - the day on which Christ, 'our Passover Lamb' was sacrificed'

Cost of Redemption

. . . you were bought at a price. (NIV) 1
Corinthians 6:20

Paul uses the term, redemption, as one of the
processes by which Christ secured salvation for
believers. He states that redemption comes from
Christ (Romans 3:24). Paul writes in Titus 2:14 that
Jesus "gave himself for us to redeem us from all
wickedness" (NIV), or "from all iniquity" (RSV).
Jesus "rescued us from the dominion of darkness "
and it is in Jesus that we have redemption and the
forgiveness for our sins (Colossians 1:13-14).

As Paul explains, Jesus willingly offered Himself as the
payment for our ransom. Christians "were bought at a
price" (1 Corinthians 6:20, 7:23). The price paid for
our redemption was Christ's shed blood on the cross
(Ephesians 1:7). Jesus said there was no greater
love expressed than to lay down your life for a friend
(John 15:13). But, Jesus demonstrated even greater
love when he laid His life down for those who were
His enemies.

Is there anything that God is asking you to do, that
you look at it as too big a "price to pay" to be
obedient? God did not consider it too great a cost
(His Son) to pay to secure your future in Heaven!

Continued tomorrow. . .

Obadiah 1 (New International Version)

1 The vision of Obadiah.

This is what the Sovereign LORD says about Edomâ€â€
We have heard a message from the LORD :
An envoy was sent to the nations to say,
"Rise, and let us go against her for battle"-

2 "See, I will make you small among the nations;
you will be utterly despised.

3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks [a]
and make your home on the heights,
you who say to yourself,
'Who can bring me down to the ground?'

4 Though you soar like the eagle
and make your nest among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,"
declares the LORD.

15 "The day of the LORD is near
for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your deeds will return upon your own head.

16 Just as you drank on my holy hill,
so all the nations will drink continually;
they will drink and drink
and be as if they had never been.

17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;
it will be holy,
and the house of Jacob
will possess its inheritance.

18 The house of Jacob will be a fire
and the house of Joseph a flame;
the house of Esau will be stubble,
and they will set it on fire and consume it.
There will be no survivors
from the house of Esau."
The LORD has spoken.

See Jonah 4:9-11

Jonah 4:9-11 (New International Version)

9 But God said to Jonah, "Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?"
"I do," he said. "I am angry enough to die."

10 But the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?"

& Micah 4:1-2

Micah 4:1-2 (New International Version)

The Mountain of the LORD

1 In the last days
the mountain of the LORD's temple will be established
as chief among the mountains;
it will be raised above the hills,
and peoples will stream to it.

2 Many nations will come and say,
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths."
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

That gave http://www.God.TV the vision that has not long been fulfilled - broadcasting from Jerusalem has somehow given them max signal power & quality - they are now starting in USA - UK viewers may recall a TV docu @ hosts Rory & Wendy Alec?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See Nahum 1:1-3 & Nahum 3:11-13

Nahum 1:1-3 (New International Version)

1 An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

The Lord 's Anger Against Nineveh

2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God;
the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.
The LORD takes vengeance on his foes
and maintains his wrath against his enemies.

3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power;
the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished.
His way is in the whirlwind and the storm,
and clouds are the dust of his feet.

Nahum 3:11-13 (New International Version)

11 You too will become drunk;
you will go into hiding
and seek refuge from the enemy.

12 All your fortresses are like fig trees
with their first ripe fruit;
when they are shaken,
the figs fall into the mouth of the eater.

13 Look at your troopsâ€â€
they are all women!
The gates of your land
are wide open to your enemies;
fire has consumed their bars.

See Habakkuk 1:1-5 & Habakkuk 2:2-3

Habakkuk 1:1-5 (New International Version)

1 The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet received.

Habakkuk's Complaint

2 How long, O LORD, must I call for help,
but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, "Violence!"
but you do not save?

3 Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate wrong?
Destruction and violence are before me;
there is strife, and conflict abounds.

4 Therefore the law is paralyzed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted.

The Lord 's Answer

5 "Look at the nations and watchâ€â€
and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your days
that you would not believe,
even if you were told.

Habakkuk 2:2-3 (New International Version)

The LORD's Answer

2 Then the LORD replied:
"Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald [a] may run with it.

3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come and will not delay.

Footnotes:

Habakkuk 2:2 Or so that whoever reads it
Habakkuk 2:3 Or Though he linger, wait for him; / he

Sorry: I only just recalled needing to check this thread: just time to print those last 3/4 taster passages..

Zephaniah 1:2-3 (New International Version)

Warning of Coming Destruction

2 "I will sweep away everything
from the face of the earth,"
declares the LORD.
3 "I will sweep away both men and animals;
I will sweep away the birds of the air
and the fish of the sea.
The wicked will have only heaps of rubble [a]
when I cut off man from the face of the earth,"
declares the LORD.

Haggai 1:2-4 (New International Version)

2 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "These people say, 'The time has not yet come for the LORD's house to be built.' "

3 Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: 4 "Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?"

Haggai 2:6-9 (New International Version)

6 "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD Almighty. 8 'The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty. 9 'The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,' says the LORD Almighty. 'And in this place I will grant peace,' declares the LORD Almighty."

Malachi 1:2-4 (New International Version)

Jacob Loved, Esau Hated

2 "I have loved you," says the LORD.
"But you ask, 'How have you loved us?'
"Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" the LORD says. "Yet I have loved Jacob,
3 but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his mountains into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals."

4 Edom may say, "Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins."
But this is what the LORD Almighty says: "They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the LORD.
