Mountaineering and the walk with God.

Yesterday I did Mt San Gorngonio in the snow alone. You start at 6,000 feet and end up at 11,500. It is 16 miles round trip. I often climb different 14 ers and other mountains and the parallels between this "sport" and the search for unity with God is staggering.

Whenever I test my physical and mental limits this way in solitude, the Spirit of God talks to me and I pray earnestly about my problems and dreams.

To me, mountaineering and the Spirtitual Path are one and the same. Moses goes up the mountain to receive the 10 Commandments, Jesus retreats to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, in the OT God often decribes His "Holy Mountain".

Humans have always viewed mountians as "sacred places" where one can coverse with God. Cimbing teaches us spiritual Truths such as comradery among Christian brothers and sisters (you have to have teamwork to make it up!) It also shows us that God is the Creator of all things and that we are to be good stewards of the animals and ecosystem.

As Christ was going to be crucified, a man from Cyrene ends up carrying his cross. We can only imagine what this meant to Christ's physical self. In this same manner, when one member of a climbing party is lagging or cannot carry there weight, we can remember this Truth from the Bible and "carry anothers burden" in the Spirit of unity.

Climbing mountains is symbolic of the Spiritual Path. The more advanced or more Christlike you become, the harder it gets. The more isolated you are from your peers and the more you depend on FAITH rather than man to take care of you.

Does anyone here climb and have a story to share?

Psalm 43:3

Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.

Psalm 48:1

Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain.

Psalm 87:1
He has set his foundation on the holy mountain;

Psalm 99:9

Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.

Isaiah 11:9

They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

Isaiah 27:13

And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

I climbed a mountain Saturday (Hanging Rock....about 25 miles from my house). My legs are still killing me today. :-?

Yes! - Mountains and the solitude they bring very often seem to be the place where God speaks to man. I have climbed such a mountain but I need to come back to this when time allows.

Wow!

Right on, it is good for the cardiovascular as well!

I forgot to put sunscreen on this last Sunday and the snow burned my face to a crisp!
