My new linux I am trying

I just downloaded Ubuntu into my macs virtual machine just to try for the fun of it. i tried it about 10 years ago and it was really confusing back the so i gave up on the experiment.

I sure dont blame you guys who do use it for doing that because its great! I was really impressed with the amount of Open source software it downloads if you want. It is like my macs app store but free :)

It is similar in many ways to using a mac I think because OSX has Linux in it too and was pretty easy to get the hang of.

Why on earth would anyone use other operating systems outside of Linux based ones if they had a choice? I noticed the new Google chrome one is Linux based too.

I am converted big time and I am very fussy :)

If I still had a pc and saw that same OS Windows would be gone ASAP particularly if all I did was web browse. I was impressed it had libre office installed ready to go as well as other things. It would save you heaps of money in software.

I dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu 10.04. I have to have Windows for certain functions that Linux doesn't support using Open source software. Work isn't going to reimburse me for software when they supply Windows software for us.

But at home I can get by with Linux and whatever software I can get for free. :yes Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office and Xiphos Bible app work for me. :thumbsup

Plus I don't have to spend money on firewalls and anti virus stuff either. If I do want them, there are some good apps for Linux in the Package Manager.

Most Linux distros aren't for everyone. Getting some apps and drivers working properly can be a little tricky. I had to jump through a few hoops to get my printer working. I also had to load the Bible software twice to get it to work.

Good on you Vic

Can I ask a question though..what's a virus? Lol

Linux is great, I use linux mint on my laptop. However, it isnt as finished as windows - largely because it doesnt have full time employed staff working on it, or third party support from companies willing to invest in it. But for what it is its fantastic.

As the previous poster said. Windows is necessary for many tasks. There is support for many apps on wine..although performance is never going to match running in windows. But if you are willing to spend time working in linux, you may find alternatives.

One thing i like is the dependence on forums. They open up a community that will often help you out if you ask. Often giving step by step instructions. Many have been where you are and understand the frustration of trying to get something to work. Or you can cut and paste an error code and find an answer to your problem within ten minutes. Linux is definitely more intensive than windows, and will easily increase your understanding of computer OSes and how they work.

There are many native games..not exactly the same as you would find in the shops, but theyre free..some even multiplayer!

Just get in there and enjoy..im not sure how you would fully install it on a mac..but google it! Get your cpu at full power on it, and get learning. If you have any problems ask on the forums..if you dont like it reinstall osx.

I would recommend linux mint over ubuntu btw (mint is based on ubuntu but has a better interface in my opinion)

Based on 5 years of using linux distros..puppy, ubuntu, fedora, mint, ultimateos, moonos etc etc.

Btw there is an ubuntu christian edition! LOL

Really? If you mean it, a virus is like a system out on the internet and in programs you download that could hack into your computer and crash it, slow it down, etc.

Wikipedia definition:

Computer virus - Not to be confused with Malware. A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate itself[1] and spread from one computer to another. The term "virus" is also commonly, but
erroneously used, to refer to other types of malware, including but not limited to adware and spyware programs that do not have a reproductive ability.

Lol I was joking, having a mac for the last 3 years which is unix/linux based you dont get viruses. I forget about them, then someone mentions it and its like I vaguely remember that problem.

Good for you, Chris! We have another Linux convert.

I was vacationing in Florida lately to see my elderly folks and brother and is family. I was strapped with Vista and Windows 7, and much like what I experience at work, it's all very buggy, "crashy" and slow even without the viruses! :lol I couldn't wait to get home to my Linux.
