Narsil was the sword wielded against Sauron by Isildur. During the battle, the sword was broken into many pieces. Isildur used one of the pieces--the one still attached to the hilt--to cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand.
After this, the shards of Narsil were brought to Rivendell and placed under the care of Elrond. As far as I know (someone correct me if I'm wrong.) they remained there until they were reforged by Elrond into the sword Anduril. Aragorn, Isildur's heir, then wielded Anduril in the final battles of the Third Age.
NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey was asked by an NPR reporter who owned Narsil. Dickey's answer was Elrond. Obviously he was thinking about the close to three thousand years the sword was in his care. The reporter stated that he was wrong and that the correct answer was Aragorn. I'm sure the NPR reporter was just reading this off of some trivia sheet, but the thinking would be that Aragorn rightfully owned the shards, since he was Isildur's heir, and that he wielded the weapon once it had been re-forged.
I can see arguments either way, but there was no time table given on the question, so I submit that the correct answer is: Isildur, since he actually wielded Narsil--as Narsil--in actual battle.
I would like to know what the forum thinks. How would you answer the question and how would you justify your answer? BTW, I was impressed that Dickey knew and explained that Narsil had been broken and reforged as Anduril
